I am going to be fishing in Canada on a lake that I have fished at before.
It has a number of rocks and snags that used to be fine to combat with 20lb mainline.
Over the past few years it has started to have dense weed (funnily enough, Canadian pondweed) from the bottom to the surface in water 6 - 12 feet deep.
The weed, and many of the rocks, now have zebra mussels on them, and these seem to be a particular problem in the weed as they can be midwater so easier for a running fish to pull the line past.
What gear would people recommend in this situation? I was thinking of 50lb PowerPro floating braid mainline to a 50lb mono snag leader, possibly with a sub float, but am not sure if that is overkill and whether a more normal set up like 30lb braid to 30lb flouro leaders would be sufficient.
I’ll be fishing in shallow water (6 to 18 feet deep) and likely to be landing fish from a boat due to the weed.
End rigs aren’t a concern as naive fish so will just use simple rigs and 30lb stiff hooklinks.
