In reply to Post #1 Personally would buy the cheapest, highest diameter backing line available - eg Korda Basix Mainline in 0.40 which is £6 for a 500M spool Using the Omni Calc your spools will take 445M of 0.40 so you'll need a spool for each reel you want to fill.
The most line efficient (but still annoying) way is to spool up 300M+ of braid on a spare spool / rod and wrap out 100M (27.5 wraps), then wind it on to the actual spool you'll be fishing with and fill with the 0.40 mono backer (finishing slightly short of the spool lip to avoid wind knots/fraps). Then simply reverse spool on another empty spool to get the braid on top and repeat this for the remaining reels. This does however assume you have a spare spool in exactly the size/spec of your Emblem spools but if not you 'could' count the number of handle revolutions for the mono and use this number for the remaining 2x spools (assuming you have 3x spools to fill) to negate additional reverse spooling. Being honest however you may screw this up as its a lot of revolutions to count without losing count somewhere in the process. . .depends on how much braid you've invested in / how good your concentration is and how anal you are. I like Vossys weighing idea but have never tried this - sounds like a sensible alternative!
Alternatively you could use a backer that matches the diameter of your braid which could negate the reverse spooling altogether. In simple terms if your braid is 0.35 you'd need to back with 480M of backer in 0.35 mono. Simply fill the spool with the cheapest 0.35 mono you can find and then wrap out 100M (27.5 wraps) and discard. Then tie the braid bulk spool to the mono on your reel spool / fill up as required and repeat . . .
FYI just done a similar exercise spread across 4x barbel reel spools (150M ea) & 3x carp reel spools (250M ea) - all from 1x 1370M bulk spool of Power Pro Braid in 0.36 for £80 posted from Tradeinn (Spanish Decathlon type store) . . . it took some time but was worth the agg!

In reply to Post #9 100% agree! Deep spools with loads of backing before the 300yds you actually wanted on the spool, doesn’t half add to the weight of the reel! Can’t help feeling a strip of dense EVA foam, taped together at the ends would be the way forward? Anyone tried that? Expect that in 5 or 6mm thick would be a lot lighter than backing.

In reply to Post #8 go feel a shallow spool with 2-300m on it, and then a deep spool filled to the same level. has made a lot of difference to how my kit feels in use.

Reducing the weight of your backing line is certainly a new one for me
Make sure you remove the stickers from your spools as well.

In reply to Post #1 Years ago lots of us used to use wool to build our spools up.
Nice and thick (if you get the right one) but also nice and lightweight.

In reply to Post #5 Thanks that's a good idea re weight 👍

Not the same size spools but until recently I've always backed with a bulk spool of Daiwa Sensor, the last lot being 12lb but poundage isn't really that important as long as it's not stupidly big that the braid might dig into it.
Depending on braid don't top up to the rim or you'll be asking for wind knots. Maybe do 1 spool first until your happy then copy to the other spools.
I did my backing by weight, weigh empty spool, add backing until your happy then weight again so it's easy to repeat the process. You could do handle turns but I always lose count

In reply to Post #3 Would you suggest a similar diameter mono to that of the braid ? I could get a 1200 yard bulk spool of 0.35 mono , put 400yds on each spool then top up with 100yds of braid , would that work ? I’ve never used braid as a mainline , do you too up the spool or leave a bit like on your Spod / market rods ?

Cheap bulk spool of sea fishing line from the bargain bin

In reply to Post #1 I've used string in the past to do this. bulk the spool up with string, then wind on your chosen line.
Mono is a good bet, but Im so used to shallower spools now that I find it feels very heavy in hand when done that way.

I'm going to start fishing a venue where braid is allowed , so I'm going to load my spare spools with that and keep my original spools with mono in case I switch venues.
My spare spools are the deep ones for the Daiwa Emblem 45 reels and take 580 yds of 0.35 line.
I only want to load around 100 yards of braid so a significant difference, does anyone have any neat ideas how to reduce the line capacity on these spools .
Mono backing seems an obvious choice but for 3 spools I'm probably looking at around 400yd s of mono per reel?
