Floodgates opened and literally she took it over from that moment until I was forced to get another freezer!

From your 1st line shouldn't that be 'another wife' :-P

Freezer burn is caused by dehydration and oxidation occurring when air reaches the surface of frozen food, often due to improper, air-permeable packaging. Through a process called sublimation, ice within the food turns directly into vapor and escapes, leaving dry, discoloured, and leathery patches.

Key causes and contributing factors include:
Improper Packaging: Food is not wrapped tightly or stored in containers that are not airtight.
Long-Term Storage: Extended time in the freezer allows air to penetrate the food.
Temperature Fluctuations: Frequent temperature changes (e.g., from opening the door often or a self-defrosting unit) speed up the sublimation process.
Damaged Seal: A faulty refrigerator gasket.

Well that's answered my question. I'm sure if I asked AI it would come back with answer for do carp find bait with Freezer burn any less palatable.

The only thing I'd be worried about is freezer burn. Got meat ot me freezer with burn on and binned it. Not sure how it effects bait. Or even if it puts carp of eating it. Not even sure what causes it. It normally happens pretty quickly with freezer bait any way. No doubt ive used bait with it and caught.

Found a couple of tubs of tiger nuts in me freezer a while back. God only knows how long they had been in there. When I opened them up they looked exactly the same as a dry nut. How something dehydrates that much in a freezer, I don't know. Even thought about boiling them again.. but thought better of it..

lol, been there!
Said to the ex wife when she got too much bread once, literally one loaf more than we had room for or could eat before it went off, “yeah, just stick it in the top of my bait freezer”. Floodgates opened and literally she took it over from that moment until I was forced to get another freezer!

I know!....

You know when you say to the Mrs you can use my bait freezer as a overflow to the household one if you really need to...then a year later there's no room and you can't see your bait or get to it without a mountain of crap needing to be moved.

Then you get so miffed at the repeated "you better start using it or I'll start throwing it away, as I can't get to my bait" that you throw some out, in hope wifey will get the hint....but doesn't.

Then finally, you just throw the lot in the bin when said wife is at work only to find something like 12kg of home rolled bait (yes...all that effort :-( ) at the very bottom

And to top it off, just the 2 of us mind, she's got a new twin door USA type and guess what...yeah, stuffs started appearing in my bait freezer again

Its getting a padlock

I don't let the age restrict me re freezer bait, just watch out if it floats, it will happen to boilies eventually too. I tend to throw the ice away in the bag and put some liquid of choice in there to get drawn in on thawing & use.

Only a year old....get em used. My dumbells hookers until recently were from 2018, I still have bulk prepped tigers from that year in mini boxes for individual use. Last year I pre baited with 2016 boilies I wanted rid off, I tried them on the hook, still caught.

Just because they may, or may not have degraded in the freezer doesn't mean they've degraded into something less attractive, on the contrary, it may be more attractive, we're not Carp, we don't know. What we do know is Carp are not humans and aren't bound by our thoughts on sell by or use by dates.

I’d be happy using it up to a year after freezing. After that I’d thaw some out and make a decision based on how it appears. Any doubts, more so with the particle, I’d bin it.
Just think how long some bags of shelflifes have been sat on the shelves of some shops. I’d imagine the freezer bait is still going to be more attractive, palatable and digestible than that?

Was wondering how long people leave bait in their freezer and still have confidence when defrosted still good to go?

I have lots of bags of particle, boillies etc in my freezer for over a year wondering if it goes off over time or still good to go.
