That's true. I can't remember the name but there was a consultancy brought in to assess.

If you look at it on google maps I'd be interested to know if anything happens to the other waters, Dove mere is it on Prince Albert, just over the M6, Boundary water park, there all similar waters.

It all depends on the criteria that the powers in charge want to look at. Shoot the birds, and favour the amphibians snd invertebrates. Not likely on a R.S .P. B. Sanctuary for example.

Yeah, saw it, I actually replied to it this avo.

According to the LAC e-mail it goes a lot further than that. To be quite frank it's already had a fish kill, and another one is on the cards due to the type of water it is, so why they allowed LAC to re stock is beyond me.

There's no way on earth a cash strapped Cheshire East Council will put any money into the water so I actually think what's happening is for the best, protection of the fish stocks. It needs desilting, has done for years, aeration isn't the answer and would be costly.

@ Mark, not sure re amphibians, there's virtually no marginal coverage, there are Gooseanders and Cormorants there every day, it'll just be a walkers pond

I don't agree with it but removing the fish would allow invertebrates.,and amphibians to increase in the lake. This is what they mean by biodiversity There are other, and in my opinion better ways of achieving this.

I saw a post on fb by Andy Latham.

I’ve received a email last night from the club in regards to shakerley mere and the draconian rules Cheshire east council have set Lymm AC which includes the removal of a large amount of the fish I’ve got a letter here that I’d urge everyone on this platform Lymm’s fb group and anyone that lives in Cheshire or the nearby counties to write to the council I want to make this clear this is not about protecting the mere it’s about destroying it. The council want anglers off and the fish removed how is removing the wildlife protecting it?
Anyway is a letter just add your details if you wish and send it to the council.

RE: URGENT OBJECTION – Licence Changes and Fish Removal at Shakerley Mere
Dear Councillors,
I am writing to formally lodge my objection to the proposed changes to the management of Shakerley Mere and the draconian licence conditions set to be imposed on Lymm Angling Club, effective 1st April 2026.
The decision to remove a significant proportion of the fish stock—specifically Carp, Bream, and Catfish—along with the total ban on traditional baits (boilies, pellets, and groundbait), is a disproportionate response to the APEM report. This move does not just restrict a hobby; it effectively guts the ecological and social heart of a historic local asset.
The Positive Environmental Impact of Anglers
I urge the Council to recognize that anglers are not the cause of water quality issues; we are the primary guardians of the water. Our presence at Shakerley Mere provides vital environmental services:
• First Responders to Pollution: Anglers are the "eyes and ears" on the bank. We are the first to report illegal discharges, blue-green algae blooms, or signs of fish distress. Without us, pollution incidents could go unnoticed for weeks.
• Active Stewardship: Lymm Angling Club members provide thousands of hours of unpaid labor in litter removal, bank stabilization, and vegetation management, keeping the park clean and safe for all visitors.
• Biodiversity Protection: Through rod licence fees and club investment, we fund the very conservation work the Council relies on. Furthermore, our presence deters anti-social behavior and illegal poaching, which can devastate local wildlife.
• Citizen Science: The data collected by anglers regarding fish health and water conditions is an invaluable resource for environmental monitoring that the Council currently receives for free.
Conclusion
By banning standard angling practices and removing the fish, the Council is alienating the very group most invested in the Mere’s health. This decision feels like a targeted attack on a peaceful community that has cared for this water for generations.
I request that the Council pauses the implementation of these changes and enters into a genuine consultation with Lymm Angling Club to explore alternative mitigations, such as improved aeration or reed bed filtration, which protect the water quality without destroying the angling heritage of Cheshire.
I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,

I re joined Lymm Angling Club this year as I'd moved closer to Shakerley Mere and was hoping to spend some time on there, mainly because it's open access and the Mrs and dogs could visit me,

Really sad to read last night that it's virtually ceasing to exist as a fishery, most of the fish will be removed, hook bait only, no freebies.

I can see it from both sides, but LAC had recently started restocking the venue, why did the council let them get that far!!! In any case, a sad loss for Cheshire fishing from a historic pov.
Maybe not so sad that my memories from the early 0's stay intact.
