Orient was drained in late 2025 for mandatory dam repairs and inspections. To the best of my knowledge, fishing there was suspended from late autumn into early winter. I’m unsure how long the temporary ban is expected to remain in effect.

It would also be sensible to check which other venues in the region are currently closed, as a recent bird flu outbreak led to the closure of several public and private fisheries. From what I recall, parts of the Champagne region were included in these restrictions.

Dijon has effectively been closed to night fishing (on public waters) since the ban was introduced across several barrages a few years ago. Day fishing is still permitted, but it is subject to strict regulations regarding boat use and the distances from which anglers may fish. There are still some exceptionally large fish in those barrages, but they are closely monitored by both the Garde and the Gendarmerie.

I know several anglers who have taken the risk of fishing on those barrages and subsequently had their equipment confiscated, along with a substantial fine to recover it. Whether it’s worth taking that risk is ultimately a decision only you can make.

So, I’m going to Mount Blanc early June to do a bit of sight seeing on the way and some walking when I get there. Heading to Chamonix for maybe 4 or 5 days.

Was thinking about staying off for a couple of nights on the way down and on the way back and doing a bit of fishing, ideally parking lakeside, I know there’s a few decent campsites around the Orient, ain’t taking a lot of gear, but prepared to have a look around, any thoughts anybody. Travelling from Calais to Reims, Troyes and Dijon on the way down. Orient looks like a good stop off point on the first part of the journey.

Also, I notice there are a few national parks and forests on the way down so if anybody knows any nice spots to stop or do a bit of wildlife watching, better still
