Elon has his faults but for sure he is a clever chap and we do have a lot to thank him for when it comes to technology.

Lots of competition arriving this year in the UK.

I'm hoping so. There are competitors, they just aren't in the public consumer market, I spoke to a guy who works for a company that does something similar, but for the maritime and
massive Industry. It's only a matter of time before they roll it out to us goyim. We'll he said I would be allowed to buy it but something like £10k a month lol

Credit where credit is due though, the whole process with starlink is fantastic. Very easy to order, and just works straight out the box. It can be a little power heavy though, well, it's not terrible, around 15 to 40 watts or so, but that adds up if you are just using a powerbank. I found it awful on 12v as well, I run mine on 48v now.

Starlink is Leo sat - low earth orbit.
Which is essentially a 5G base station from space. Well 2Km up.
This will allow for total coverage and I guess things like driverless cars can begin to become a reality
There are fortunately many competitors to Elon and 1000s of Leo’s are to be deployed over the next few years with billions pumped into this market.

I detest Elon Musk, so I tried everything I could to avoid Starlink, but really, it's a fantastic product. I have a starlink mini, and get 250+ mbps download and 30+ upload in some really remote areas, and i never angle it properly, its just fixed to my van roof. Can use it up to 2 months in Europe before having to return. The starlink mini is usually on sale, and once you have it, you don't need to keep a rolling contract, just pay by the month. It's not cheap at £99 a month, but you only need to pay for the months you use it.

I tried all the fancy 5g and 4g wifi things, and no matter what ariel, you will struggle with signal in a lot of places. The only downside of starlink is you need line of site with the sky, it will work under a light tree canopy, but your ping will suffer. Fine for work or streaming, but don't try playing Call of duty lol.

If you can, and rely on the internet it is absolutely the way to go. Unfortunately.

Firstly apologies for taking the thread off topic and to those who don’t want to read about hiking🤣
Hi Chris it’s a sad fact of life that getting old isn’t good on the joints, I get bad issues with my knees these days, spent a lot of years at work working under pub counters installing gear that’s taken its toll on them, I love walking up there but not sure how many years of hiking I’ve got left, I enjoy spending a day with a decent challenge in front of me but always suffer so much more coming down than going up, luckily I tend to recover fairly quickly so can usually do a hike a day when I go, anyway mate you take care, let’s keep our fingers crossed the Iran situation gets better soon or we’re all in the crap!

Hi Henry

Still deciding if the e sim is the way forward or EE

The lakes, beautiful pal ā¤ļø

Yes, did Scafell, and on the way down and twisted my knee, had a few problems since

High street is one of my favourites, first walk up there as a kid with my family. Last time I walked it was from the Haweswater hotel, red squirrels there, straight up though from there!

Last walk, last year with my daughter, Langdale pikes, stunning, carried the dog quite a way too

I’m due a trip, usually do Coniston at the start of every year but my circumstances have changed so not been for a couple of years. Scotland, Devon and Cornwall and and Anglesey were the main places for me last year

Take care pal and enjoy the walking

Hello Chris, apologies for the late reply, havent been logging on as much lately and got home projects on the go
Yes absolutely correct esim is not a physical sim card, not something that i believe is that common here, i had a nightmare when i first got the phone (brought over from the States for me] but once i got it sorted its been great, i did have a small issue a year or so ago when o2 did some jigging of their signalsšŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø but I just went into a store and they sorted it in no time at all, I’m not on the cheapest plan, Ā£16 a month for sim only deal as the phone was bought and not on a plan, but for that I get unlimited roaming in Europe ( I go to Ireland a lot to visit relatives ) and it also includes roaming in the states, unlimited calls and I literally hardly touch the sides when it comes to data so my bills are never anymore than that.
On a different subject I’m back up to the Lakes in early May, might try Scafell again from Wasdale this time and possibly High St as when I hiked them both a few years ago the weather at the top was crap, i think you were there at the same time as me and the day I walked up High St (wet, windy and zero visibility) you went up Scafell from memory, last year when I went I had an itch to scratch ( Helvellyn ) I last hiked it in ā€˜84 in Doc Martens and with snow on the ridge, I wanted to see how my nerve was as I’m not a lover of heightsšŸ˜‚, anyway it went well and had a beautiful day with a reward of a lovely pint ( or two! ) in the pub at the top of the village, I also wanted to do Blencathra ( not along sharp edge but from Threlkeld, I started late at two as I’d been to Keswick for lunch and wasn’t sure I was going to bother but again it was a beautiful day so I thought what the heck! My knees are knackered though so coming down is always painful, that’s not gonna get better anytime soon but knee supports help, I also drove through the Honister pass and walked around Buttermere ( busy but still one of the best walks in the Lakes), saw the Yank transport plane fly through twice, I think they often fly through Honister with the back door open, I’d do that again and combine it with a hike up Haystacks, I saw loads of jets but always in the distance, it’s so exhilarating when they fly through.

Nice one Henry, and nice to hear from you, thank you šŸ‘

I’m with EE. based on below I had a look and you can buy a bundle.

I take it an e sim is no SIM card?

Some type of SIM or a bundle might do me, I was thinking I might need a router too, hoping the signal is OK!
