In reply to Post #12 Thanks i had been toying with the idea of fitting a smaller ringset

In reply to Post #11 Yup, I had them rebuilt like-for-like with the standard 50 ring set mate.

In reply to Post #6 Hi yonny can i ask how you had them rebuilt, i think from memory you saying yours were built with his 50mm ringset which usually went 50,40,30,25,20 16 tip?

In reply to Post #8 The x lite 3.5 and 2.75 which are more of a through action rod and were brought out by nick before the 3.25 x lite s which has a faster tip and is imo the better casting of the x lites i have mentioned,
I still have the x lite s and still love them, and have owned many of nicks rod range, there was a rod range built for erics angling im sure they were built on the 3.25 xlite s blank
I know nick tweaked the x lite s quite a few years ago now he did tell me what was changed but also said i wouldn't tell any difference from using them

In reply to Post #5 I had Kev at East Coast Rod Building and Repair rebuild four X-lites for me.
He stripped them right back to the carbon, rerung them with ten plus the tip. 25, 16, 12 and then 8's to the tip. The line shoots out like a laser.
I forget to tell Kev to leave the blanks matt and he coated it. To be honest I don't mind it and absolutely love using the rods. I really want to go somewhere and give them beans to see what they're capable of rung that way.

In reply to Post #4 I don't remember ever seeing a 3.5 tc X-lite listed.
I'm sure that you're aware that the Nick Buss X-lite and X-lite S blanks were made by Century to Nicks design. He was quite heavily involved with designing with/for Century. I know he was involved with both the FG and FS blanks and I think the X-lite's were the forerunners of the NCS.

In reply to Post #6 Cheers Yonny. I've got the normal ones, just standard X-lite's with the outer braid weave.
I've often wondered whether trying to get the varnish off with the outer braid weave would end up knackering them or not? and what they would like like with the varnish left off so matte/unfinished.

In reply to Post #5 I had my NB X-Lite S' rebuilt by Roger Hurst last year. Just left them matte.

Hi Andy, how did you have you X-lites rebuilt? Did they remove the varnish and re-varnish? or did you have something different done? Like being left matte

Thanks much for your comments. Very interesting!
Actually I have been offered 3.5lbs Nick Buss X-Lite rods so not the 3.25lbs I thought they were. Still a bit expensive here for such old rods but they sound interesting for sure.
To make matters more complicated the seller is also offering Century X-Lite rods in that testcurve. Wonder if they are identical to the Nick Buss X-Lites?
In any case they are ringed for regular distance fishing at that time which means a 40mm starter.

In reply to Post #1 I have both the X-lite (2.75tc) and X-lite S (3.25tc).
The X-lite have an external ballistic braid on the butt section and part of the tip section, the X-lite S have an internal (flush braid). Both are lovely rods. I've had the X-lite rebuilt Kev Baynes Sniper style, 10 small guides plus the tip and they are an absolute joy to play fish on. I haven't had the chance to cast them flat out, but they will flick either a 2oz or a 4oz lead 85 yards no bother.

In reply to Post #1 Hi
I have had some Nick Buss Century NCS 12 ft 3.25 since 2000, light and responsive, slightly like a Torrix. used to bash 4 ounce leads a fair way, but OK close in. Have a prototype Xlite with the old ballistic nylon on the but section, a stiffer rod I would say, maybe faster actioned? I like the xlites. Both of these rods are quite old and i don't think nick does the xlite any longer, or at least century don't do the ballistic nylon (like the old FMJ's) so a tricky question to answer. Of course Nick would know the answer!
good luck!

Hello,
I have the chance to acquire a pair of Nick Buss Century NCS 12 ft 3.25lbs rods and also Nick Buss Century X Lites.
How do these rods compare and different?
How do these eg compare to todays Harrisons or Centuries?
Thank you for your assessment and have a great season!
