Just ordered one of those gizmos, being a bit of a technophobe I always had to give my lad the sd and get him to send to me as I don't own a laptop or pc but that sounds simple enough for me.
Btw the remote control if you want it is an ML-L3 . £20 off Amazon but the 6 quidder I got off eBay works perfectly fine.

In reply to Post #9 Thanks that looks ideal and easy to use. Will that work on android too?

In reply to Post #6 On my iPhone I use one of these.
So once my rod has been recast and I want to check out the photos (or WhatsApp them to a mate) I grab the SD Card out of the camera and stick it into this, then this into my iPhone.
Next load the Photos app on your iPhone and import all/one/some of the pics.
I tend to leave them on the SD card (you get offered the option to delete them off the SD card once your phone has imported them)
Now spam your mates with the pics...

In reply to Post #6 Hi, most phones now, Apple or Android have OTG (on the go), on them.
Basically you can use the connector on the phone, you use to charge the phone, to connect to other things, PC, other phone, flashdrive, SD card in a adapter, SLR Camera etc etc.
Then they will act as a mass storage device.
Using say file manager on your phone, you can transfer, copy etc, files from the other device. Or Visa Versa.
Example: you want to copy photo's off your phone to have a back up. Buy (unless you have one) say a Flash drive, portable HDD etc, SD or Micro SD card in a adapter, connect it to bottom of your phone & copy away (don't cut if you want them still on the phone).
You don't need anything special for OTG !!!
Main thing is to have the right connectors, be it cables or adapters.
You can get say Flash Drives with any connector on the end or even multi, say a USB A & USB C. Or ones with Apple Lightening connector on them.
For say a SLR to your phone, example Android, prob need a USB C male to USB C male, cable or adapter. Apple check phone connector on it etc. Then just connect them together.
Some older devices might have older connections, like USB Micro or USB Mini etc etc. Or might not do OTG.
Cables & Adapters cheap enough, i bought USB A Female to USB C Male adapters, 2 for £5 off eBay. Backed up 22 Gig of Photo's off GF's phone for her onto a Flash Drive. I backed 7 Gig of Photos directly onto my PC.
Size & Speeds of say back up devices are now cheap, but you pay extra for size and/ or speeds (write & read).
Bob
ps OTG is normally far far quicker & reliable, than other ways.
pps sometimes beforehand, reboot your devices (Phone, PC etc), sometimes they can have dicky fits.

In reply to Post #6 Depends on your phone.
You may be able to plug an SD card reader direct into your phone via USB.
Otherwise, you need to transfer the images on SD card to a device (e.g PC). Then transfer to phone via cable, or via cloud storage as an intermediate.

In reply to Post #5 That's for the replys. I'll probably take the free nikon d3200 and see how I get on then. Also what is the easiest way to get the photos from camera to my phone? Thanks

D3200 is what I use, I like you never had only ever used a phone for the last few years and had very little photography experience and first few times using it just stuck it on auto mode, there are loads of tutorials on YouTube for the camera which I found really helped me get a bit more out of it.
You can also pick up a remote control for it off eBay for around a fiver 👍

In reply to Post #1 Take the free Nikon and see if it really gives you what you expect, in return for the complexity of carrying it, converting photos from SD card to wherever you will view/use them, etc. You will not get anything significantly better for your budget.
Also depends on your mobile phone and what you will do with your DSLR photos. I take many photos on phone and full frame ‘pro’ level DSLR. I am happy with most phone photos, viewing them on an Ipad Pro, and have even printed phone photos to poster size for my wall at home (and people don’t believe that it was taken with a phone).

In reply to Post #1 If the Nikon's free I'd snap their hand off. Learn how to use it and see how changes to the aperture etc effect the photo. Once you get the hang of it, get some editing software and start shooting in RAW. If you find it's not your thing you've not lost anything.

I'm in the market for a new camera. I am a complete newbie to cameras as i have always used my phone. Looking for something fairly simple to set up and use so will have decent pictures. Have a budget of around £200-300. I have been offered a second hand nikon d3200 camera and it has a 18-55mm lense on it. I'll be getting for nothing so not sure if that's any good for what I need it for? Thanks
