In reply to Post #10 Yes, it's something I should have sorted out back in April, but because nobody asked I have procrastinated.
With email in place I get spammed senseless sometimes with certain debug emails/errors ... and I don't miss tidying that lot up.
My Mrs get's suspicious when my phone keeps pinging constantly!
The first night I stayed at her place apparently my phone kept her awake all night (I sleep through it). She thought it was Plenty of Fish emails/SMS coming through ... I should be so lucky

In reply to Post #9 Not that I get many PMs but it's easy for me to check for them when I log on as I do it regularly.
When it is useful is when you PM a user who doesn't come on often, the email prompts them to log on.

In reply to Post #8 The server doesn't send ANY emails anymore.
I could have a word with the hosting company and see if they can sort it out, it's their side of things. My side hasn't changed.

We used to get an email to tell us we had received a PM
Is that function coming back?

In reply to Post #5 So this would work like as good (or better) than also having a "sent" message folder...
Yes, it’s a format/layout that we are all used to seeing when we look at the actual forum.
PM inbox would be neater too.
Rather than having 15 individual PM’s from “Goldfish” there would be the one, and it would light up/yellow icon/bold/whatever to show you there was a new reply in there
It’s quite a bit of work though, which is why I went for the quick and dirty edit the other night just to get the requested feature in place
@Vossy1 - if only I knew someone who could change profile pics…or at least make a profile picture for someone look ‘normal’ when they were looking at it, but to everyone else it would appear as a different image

In reply to Post #5 Sometimes I may send a message but can't always see what's been sent until I get a reply!
That was exactly what started this whole thing...said Mr Goldfish to Karlos
No, I don't need a Goldfish avatar thanks

In reply to Post #3 I would like to rewrite the way PMs work, so they basically become equivalent to a little 2 person thread (a bit like me and you talking on this thread now)
In this way, everything is neater….the history of what has been said is all in the correct order and users can’t accidentally or intentionally mix up replies by typing below the message they just received (things start getting messy and hard to read when that happens)
So this would work like as good (or better) than also having a "sent" message folder...
Sometimes I may send a message but can't always see (remember) what's been sent until I get a reply!
I might want to copy and send the same info to others later on but it's too much of a hassle to rewrite all the waffle...

In reply to Post #3 Number 1 should be go out fishing
I know where you're coming from re covering server costs, been there too.
We went about it by having a banner on the top of the forum, 4 sponsors irrc. 1 was a member who'd started his own related business, that was nice. A set fee was charged, it was next to nowt, as you say to cover server costs. We did do some merch every now and then, and the sponsors threw competitions every now and then too, which was nice.
We started to build up a pot of excess cash (not much) which was never our intention, so we launched a social once a year. The costs of the social were minimal but enough to drain most of the reserves bar a couple of years server costs.
Our sponsors fed back increased sitte traffic but not necessarily through the forum, I'm guessing from people who'd navigated away but still wanted to visit the shops, or had book marked them, who knows.
We did get advertisers try to take all 4 slots away from the original sponsors on renewal but that wasn't right.
It's all fun and games, or at least it should be, when it gets too serious it's no more fun it's time to stop....sounds like a betting firms advert...when the fun stops stop

In reply to Post #2 I would like to rewrite the way PMs work, so they basically become equivalent to a little 2 person thread (a bit like me and you talking on this thread now)

Maybe something for the future. My priority at the moment is going to be
1 - Get a version of the sites code where I can turn off Google ads. Yes, they are annoying, I hate them, but the pennies they bring in go towards server hosting. To be transparent, I got £65 from Google for the last month and the hosting costs £126 a month. So I am paying out of my own pocket to keep the site going. If I can add a couple of premium features (first of which is to turn the ads off!) then I benefit from the one or two people who are happy to pay £1 a month (or whatever the price will be, £10 a year maybe, less if more people want it…I’m not trying to be greedy, just need to cover costs and I know most users won’t want to pay, which is fine )
2 - Get the layout more mobile friendly. Gone are the days when most users are surfing using their PC/Laptop/iMac. The majority of users now are on mobile phones.
3 - Get classified section redone so it’s easy to post pics of items for sale, and the seller can mark individual items SOLD. Probably some kind of feedback of user trustworthiness as well, but generally it seems we’re all a lovely bunch and things don’t go fruit-shaped too often.

In reply to Post #1 &
Said goldfish is eternally grateful, it's been bothering me for years...and now no more, your a star K, thank you
The amount of times I've asked, 'did I reply to your pm', sometimes with no reply, so I guess I hadn't

Disclaimer: The output looks a bit pants visually because I've just spent the time focusing on getting the message accurate (finger crossed)
If you go to your PM inbox, and click on a PM -- untidily at the top -- you will see a message saying:
"You have not replied to this PM"
or something more like
"You replied to this PM : 25/11/2024 23:29:55"
HOPEFULLY, this is accurate...feedback welcome if it's not so I can fix any bugs. I've just spent some time testing on a few of my PMs and the timings seem logical (i.e. it says I have replied at a date/time AFTER I received the PM)
Why have I bothered adding this (after 20+ years of it not being there)?
Because someone ( who shall remain nameless, but has the memory of a goldfish ) said they could never remember if they had replied to a PM
