In the early 0's we'd found a love of Thailand and naturally that found it's way into my fishing, think I've posted this before on here.

I used a very similar fermented product (whatever it was), grated in some beachan, added some fish sauce and in my infinite wisdom added either Richworth Crab and Mussel or Monster Mussel. May have been both, but I've just asked the wife which one I used to trick her into smelling and she says it was Monster Mussel 😂

Anyhow, height of summer at Sapphire Lakes, own made Nutrabaits BFM with Raspberry, glugged or dipped, can't rem, in that 'concoction. There followed the most uncomfortable night in my bivvy ever...that smell 😱...I'll never forget it :-X

Thing is, I was working in aseptics at the time, think wearing gloves all day, and that smell just kept giving for near a week...I wasn't very popular 😂 In the end the only thing that stripped it, and the rest of the oils from my skin, was washing my hands in IPA (not beer) 😂

Was effective though but even with the copious amounts of gloves at my disposal it was a very short lived affair!

The only thing that would worry me about that paste is the 'preserved' part mate. I guess as it's wet it has to be preserved. The fermented block is just sun dried. Has a shelf life of 6 months to 1 year when kept dry. Bet it will still work well though.

All of the block is good, some are far more effective than others though I have found. All of the blocks are based on fermented shrimp. Some are heavy on Krill as well, others shrimp and fermented white fish.

It's the Krill/shrimp ones that have always been best for us. The Malaysian gear is just different to the rest. Comparing that to what you would get from a bait company is like chalk & cheese.

I got a few of these from the Asian supermarket, made in Vietnam.
Now I've used the belachan blocks and other jars of thick paste before but when I unscrewed the lid of this gear I was nearly sick. 🤢 🤮
Made my mate sniff the jar and he was nearly chucking, its like Surströmming 🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮

Quote... Am thinking i will likely be pre-soaking for 24 hours ahead of use.

Take some Belacan, Malaysian is the only way to go and by far the best (double fermented Krill). It's made different in every country in SE Asia. Different varieties of fish. The others don't tend to use Krill like the Malaysian stuff. You don't want the liquid versions available in the UK, or any block from a bait firm. In the UK you need to look at SE Asia superstores like Wing Yip in Croydon. We source ours in Asia, but I bet you can get it in Wing Yip or similar. Just make certain that if possible it is Malaysian produced, so it's Krill based.

Cut it up into small chunks. Now we do this next step in a bait heater overnight & we use a different liquid. You could do this with warm water for a bait soak and via an old pan on a mega low heat (in the garden as it stinks so bad). All you are looking to do is turn the block into liquid by gently heating it over an extended period of time. Keep stirring it. It will all melt into a fishy liquid.

You cannot begin to imagine the fishy stink that this will impart on your freezer bait if you pour it over your bait as a soak. It's not a chemical smell. It's real intensely fermented food, that you have liquified. It's absolute fire for carp.

Edit... Never listen to what the bailiff tells you. Everyone will be told the same. Be different. You wlll get different results.

It's quite a strong flavour but I wouldn't recommend a 24hr soak with it as it's a soluble bait that's designed to release attraction as soon as it enters the water. A 24hr soak would cause it to almost break down.

Depending on the session length matching a washed out bait would imply lower flavour levels, paler baits and perhaps something just a tad softer/more soluable.
A 24 hour presoak is going to leave you with pretty soft baits, even if you're trying to match prebait all you neeed is a few for hookbaits.

It's the kind of thing I did on the day to top up with older looking feed the next morning, otherwise just kept a pop-up tub with some hard hookers in lake or hemp water.

Cheers

Was also looking at Baitworks pro.
Have you used the Optibaits Ocean mix.

How pungent is it.. does it retain that wiff after being in the water.

Lake im on head bailif tells me that a washed out bait works best and that the carp here wo.t touch new ones (hence the 24h presoak idea)
