There's no rush, do your fishing and wait until the evenings draws in and the weather turns

Thanks guys.
If lots of people wanted to pay then it'd be cheaper, I'm not looking to give up the day job, just thought a quid a month (£10 year) was nothing for users who use the site a lot and get some value/enjoyment from it.

Many many moons ago there was some donations from people when I needed to upgrade the server because it was too busy and the hardware couldn't cope.
I think I made a note against the donors usernames, so those people will get a free year of 'Premium'

I guess I'm not going fishing tonight then - I need to get this image upload implemented for post creation. Few evenings of planning/coding, but I've been meaning to do it for ages

I mostly use a laptop and although i get ads they don't bother me too much, but I do realise that this site is Karl's own creation, and in this day of big corporate run social media I'd be happy to give a tenner a year to keep this unique personally run website going

I'd pay for a year of no ads lol

I'd also be willing to donate to storage costs. May be worth a simple ask in general section, I'm sure people would put a couple of pennies in.

Or how about a small commission for donation for classifieds on an honour system?

I'll ping you a message

Yes. The code is already in place, I use it for uploading profile pics.

There's a few things which need to be considered, couple of the obvious ones:
1 - Checking the pictures, we don't want anything dodgy
2 - Server space. I can scale the pics down to a forum friendly resolution/size which will save space but I bet the storage will soon mount up and it'll cost me at some point.

I was going to offer the ZERO google ads and photo upload as part of a subscription. Not that I want to charge silly money, but I thought people would probably be willing to pay a tenner for a year with no Google Ads, photo storage against their account and instant classified access (rather than having to wait x months and 100+ posts)

Last time I mentioned it, it went down like a lead balloon! 😂
I think people have gotten used to me doing everything for free (the server costs come straight out my own pocket...cue violins)

Is there any way you'd be able to make posting pics directly from a phone without using a hosting site possible Karl?

How about this.
As part of the forum rewrite, I was going to allow users to order the Forum sections
e.g. I'd wanted something like
Classifieds
Feedback to CarpForum
Venues (UK)
Venues (Foreign)

So I could make the ReadNext functionality adhere to that, and if Non-Carp is last on a users list then it'll be the last they see when using Read Next.

Of course enjoy the weekend.
I think Non carp was omitted because of the amount of banal banter on the footie thread but that's mostly stopped now. Maybe just include everything in Non Carp except football and maybe Boxing and Moto GP
By including the rest it could for instance help the person wanting advice on his garage floor, I'm sure there's plenty of builders on here that could help.

I left non-Carp out on purpose...but I guess I could make it an option that users could set - "Include non-Carp for Read Next function"

Not at the moment though, I am fishing

I see you've made a further change that works well and is easy to understand
Just need to include Non Carp into the function

I made some changes before I went to bed, there was some niggles I had with the old version that's been in place for many years.

Example niggle:
Let's assume that in the Classifieds section there's only one topic with unread messages called "Rod for sale" - I click on that topic and I read it.
There's now no unread messages in "Rod for sale" and therefore none in it's parent the Classifieds section of the forum.

My old code used to still offer a read next link for 'Classifieds'. When you clicked it, the ReadNext code would realise there weren't any topics in classifieds that needed reading and drop you straight into the topic (anywhere on the site) which had the most unread messages.

So now, hopefully, you don't get offered a Read Next link for that section. Instead it says "No unread topics in Classifieds"

The 'global / generic' Read Next is still there and currently labelled as "Sitewide topic with most unread posts". I need to make that less verbose, but it was about 3am and I don't enjoy English homework at the best of times.

If there's any edge cases/bugs let me know in here and I'll get them fixed.

Oh yeah, I optimised the stored procedure in the database so that hopefully it will be just as fast...even though it's doing a count (of topics with unread messages)

Is the new function better?

Edit
I think I'm getting used to it

I think it's been replaced with a "Sitewide topic with most unread posts" button?
