M-tech was the first ever boilie I used that I caught on. It holds a special place in my heart and even when I've rolled the version below I've caught on it every time.

My memory was sparked, a quick delve into my A4 folders of interesting things in A4 sleeves from yesteryears magazines.... bingo - an article in Carpworld - The Terry Hearn Tapes, a 6 or 7 part series.

Found a advert from Cotswold baits it was Owner Chris Nicolaou and Brian Parker.

Yep thats the one

I think there was quite a bit in BC at the time about MTech

Didn't Brian Parker have something to do with it?

First time I saw M-Tech mentioned was by Rob Maylin saying it was a good bit of bait to Terry Hearn, that was around the time he was fishing Sonning Eye and baiting heavily by the rucksack load to feed off the monster shoals of bream, then switched over to M-Tech dabbled with it for a bit, probably cost DT a small fortune in boilies, then went back to Dynamite.

Ah yes I remember seeing that somewhere before

I didn't realise dynamite fish gutz was such a renowned flavour too

The recipe for the M-Tech was published in the Osprey Specimen Group & Friends book however there were a few things they missed out -

They also included a highly concentrated version of what is now Dynamite Baits Fish Gutz and the quoted 15g of betaine hcl.

The enzyme was called Digest-Ade and I used to be able to source it but not anymore.

Digest-Ade was originally introduced into the bait world via Cotswold/DT Baits. At that time it was only used in one bait called the M-Tech. The M-Tech basemix consisted of very high quality milk proteins and fishmeal which needed the Digest-Ade, especially in the winter, for the carp to utilise and digest the bait better.
It is a proteolytic enzyme-prepared through submerging of selected bacterium . The main component is Substilisin-a, a endoproteinase of the serine type. Recommended for human grade food. This has an active life of minimum 12 months.
Works well in ph levels 5.5-8.5 It does not need to be triggered, and you can actually see the protein breaking down.
Digest-ade helps to break down the protein chains turning them into free flowing aminos which the fish find easier to digest. To get the best from Digest-Ade then keep boiling times to an absolute minimum. You are looking for a bait with a soft, paste like centre, but a skin on the outside.

The original also included a flavour called Fish Frenzy which smelt highly of ammonia. Again almost impossible to find.

Very good

Didn't M-Tech have enzymes in it too?

I remember the likes of TH moving onto it when it first came out

Because I know the person who used to roll it for them and I also have the recipe for it. Super high quality fishmeal with milk proteins.

The only commercial bait that included 15g of betaine hcl per kg was DT/Cotswold Baits M-Tech.

Dave Moore
"I m a great believer in using Betaine HC1 not because of its attraction qualities, but as an aid to the digestive process. The hydrochloric acid portion of this product helps breakdown proteins and aids trypsin digestion. It is also very water soluble so it can be used comfortably at moderate levels. In fish meal based baits I will use this product at this time of the year up to a level of 20g per 500g of dry mix. In any bait that has a high milk protein content I will reduce that by about 25%. This is mainly due to the bait texture; milk protein baits have a tendency to form a tighter structure and absorb water at a lower rate."

Ian Moore (CCMoore)
"We recommend using Betaine at 2%+ as used in the aquaculture industry whereas many companies suggest 0.2-0.5% inclusion which is really not worth using.

following the feed science- 2-2.5% betaine anhydrous was the optimal inclusion when soya meal is used as a fishmeal replacement.

Like you, Just surprised it is in print, by someone in the know, rather than us thinking it was high in semo/soya flour 😀 back in the day.
Are what we may nowadays class as high carb content Maize/semo/soya flour baits really that bad ?
The overall bait is probably 25-30% protein, and some FLAA, Richworth had a great base model that rolled well through the machines and like many others it is all about the powder and liquid attractors doing the business, slightly tweaked for different versions. Globally they all caught loads of fish.

I bet quite a few proven wonder baits nowadays haven't got the expected nutritional ingredient content what with 'scientific feed information' being the way to go, baits being around 35 or 36% protein, often less, and with costs rocketing.
All about the attractors on an average base mix.

I've used up to 15g in a mix before. It's also a good digestive aid.

Yes im aware of that. It's just surprising that the majority of that mix is semo and soya, with just 10% LT94

20g betaine per kg is also a lot higher than I've seen recommended before

Definately worked though

Bait doesn't need to be expensive, or complicated to catch fish.
Just attractive enough to be eaten. The rest of the hype often catches more anglers 😉

May appear ok, but will be degraded, I'm not convinced that old bait is still worth using. Ive spoken to several. Bait suppliers who all say after 6 months, well let's be kind it wont be at it's best

Slightly off topic but I remember when Richworth wound up their bait production and sold off their remaining stock. I called them up to see what bait (frozen) they had left as they were selling it off very cheap, hoping to get a few bags of tuttis. No such luck as the tuttis and S-core had all been snapped up first but they had some KG1 and Multiplex available and I bought 20 x 1 kilo bags of each in 10mm frozen. From memory it was £1.50 per kilo. Most of that is still stacked up at one end of my chest freezer and I occasionally take a bag out to go into my spod mix and it still appears spot on when defrosted👍

Its that the tackle box catalogue?

Richworth did some quality products, i loved there Scopex bait spray for floaters and their fishmeal pop up mix. I had a season on one water on multiplex and did alright. Never used the Ultraplex, my mate gave me 20kg and i decided to use it as feed bait with my other bait, fish went nuts for it, rolling over the bait like bream just after i had put it in lol.

Richworth Crab & Mussel was deadly for big Tench, had quite a few doubles on it 'back in the day'. Cast straight into weed and the Tench ripped it up to get to the bait, nuts!

Ultraplex was a vanilla scented fishmeal with fruit oils, and molasses i believe. I think the link is supposed to be just fishy but i believe there may be something else in there, or i picked up on something lol

Had never heard of that one lol
Google says that was released on 05.

I was using yucatan in 1990 and 1991 as I caught a lake record on the flavour in one of my rolled baits.
So around September 91 as it’s the year my eldest was bornin January and I was fishing evenings Monday and Wednesdays on my way home from work 👍.
When I smelt the link I was instantly taken back.

Hello everyone, just got some bags of 20 millies of Mainline shelf life Link Boilies

Any experiences with this bait? I've been using sucesfully the Salty Squid ones, even on the heart of winter with very hard conditions, but there's not so much info here in Spain since Mainline is not as popular as another countries or UK obviously

Any advice? I mostly fish reservoirs and gravel pits

Tight lines
