The last syndicate ticket i had was when my wife was pregnant with my son, 16 yrs ago and in that time i probably did less then half a dozen nights!

Now he's 16/17, has a girlfriend who drives he about a lot less and I've now got myself a very nice venue which i could see out the rest of days on, but I'll do say 1 quick night every 10 days or so where it doesn't impact on home life - equally if the misses is doing 'girly stuff' with friends i have my sanctuary and release now and its so far working well, obviously when I've got the buzz for sure I'd rather be there a bit more but equally can walk the venue, prepare bait & kit ect.

Very well put. I went through the stage of thinking that fishing was the be all and end all but realised that I was using it as an excuse to dodge my responsibilities as a husband and father.

At the time I had a job that involved long hours on shift but as soon as they were over, I'd blow the off-time on fishing.

It really came home to me when I went into my eldest son's bedroom one day and spotted a silver medal for finishing second in the area Rugby school cup. I didn't even know!

I enjoy my fishing but tend to fit it around life rather than it taking over. When I'm sat at home with the missus watching some cr*p on the telly, I might be there but in my mind I'm not!

The only nights I do now are an annual UK social, a week away from the family, with beers, wine and laughs. Poor personal hygiene and everything I've always loved.

This year the start of the week was very kind to me and the second half beat me up big time, but the thing that I noticed more than ever before was the fact, that whilst I love fishing, I love being a dad and at home even more. I got a brilliant photo of the biggest mirror in the lake, but it's not even in my top 50 memories of the year. Maybe it's age and nostalgia- but holidays and Christmas, graduations, and fancy meals are the best memories of all. Maybe I am finally cured, no jealousy or envy for those that sacrifice everything for monsters and rare ones, in fact I even have sympathy for them. I want my life littered with family memories not just bloated fish. So the message to everyone is fishing is a privilege and a hobby, a beautiful waste of time as Jim once wrote, I may not be the best angler - but I wouldn't swap my camera roll for Terry Hearn or anyone else.

Nobody wants a gravestone with Good Angler - I hope that as our sports moves into a more commercial, driven and monetised state that enough of us appreciate it for what it really is - drinking tea, chatting sht with mates and knowing that the last hook pull, wasn't actually the end of the world.

A long and boring post, but climbing into ,y proper bed tonight makes me realise, it's just fishing.
