Think I'll stick to an Analogue bait boat on a stick. One less thing to charge and worry about..

In reply to Post #4 Contains surface spread of flame . . .I'd rather use one than not . . .have several for varying sized batteries . . .and always charge 'em under observation

@bmthman, it gets so boring.
I'm quite capable of spodding. Give me a choice of a bait boat user either side of me or 2 people hitting 30 wraps with a 1lb spod for 15 minutes each I'll take the bait boat every time.
You won't see me saying spodding should be banned though, better more positive things to do with the energy. Each to their own

In reply to Post #5 I bought from a dealer from ebay in Germany. He has obviously sold - knowingly or not I dont know - hundreds of these fake chargers.
Only after my "event" when I asked someone who is more of an expert in this he said you have to watch out for the hologram sticker on the underside of the imax B6 charger under which there is a serial number.
I now bought from a airplane model dealer who has decades of experience. The not so funny thing is that either of the very well proven battery and charger I now bought as replacements from this dealer were not more expensive than the fake ones!
Being in the model airplane trade where so many batteries are used he advised the use of one of the battery bags from reliable sources for transport. And of course to never ever charge any batteries without supervision!
Please take care. It is not over exaggerating. It could have been an extremely costly mistake both for my health and my house!

Maybe as anglers we should rely less (not totally) on technology then we wouldn't need all these gizmos and the problems they bring?

In reply to Post #6 Unknowingly... they know what there selling. Buy cheap you take a risk. I've had electrical items from Amazon that have been faulty. They don't even want them back. They refund with no quibble. They no the issues. Amazon are like the car boot other E commerce world..

Yep a minefield, Amazon among many large retailers have been unknowingly selling fake versions for years, unfortunately supply chain is not immune to it.
The battery bags can be hit and miss do your research.
Good example below.

I never charge lithiums etc overnight.

In reply to Post #4 Within reason, yes.
Marruo, why did you buy that charger, was it cheaper than buying from a trusted source, or was it from a trusted source?
I watched a youtube vid the other day, some chap buying fake DeWalt but from some of the biggest online U.K retailers who themselves didn't know thet were fake.
With something like batts it's worth paying the extra for a legit charger. Naturally batts may get damaged or go faulty with a legit charger too.

In reply to Post #1 Fair play for bringing this to light. You hear horror stories of batteries all the time. Thankfully you weren't charging overnight as a lot of people do.
Take notice everyone.

A few days ago I was loading the battery of my electric bait spreader for my Deeper Quest (a homemade version made with 3D-Printing).
I was using a standard, proven 2200mAh 35C battery normally used for model air planes.
Bought a standard imax B6 battery charger to charge this battery that had worked well...until yesterday.
Thank god I was sitting in the same room when I charged the battery because all of sudden I heard a faint hissing noise which at first I couldnt locate. When it got louder I realized it came from the battery that was already bloating. As soon as smoke came out of the battery I grabbed the whole assembly, ran into the kitchen and while throwing it into the sink it exploded with a loud bang followed by a 1m high, extremely hot flame!
After about 10 seconds it was all over. My sink had burn marks, the walls around it were black and not only was I extremely lucky not to burn myself, I was more than lucky that I supervised the charging (something which I had not done in the past!).
If I had charged the battery without beeing in the same room our 3 storey house would have burned for sure as I had the charger close to a wooden cupboard. The heat alone would have been enough to set the cupboard and then everything else in flames.
After the shock I tried to find out what had happened.
Seems I bought a fake imax charger that did NOT have the hologram sticker and serial number it needed to have to prove its not a fake. I wasnt aware of that but I attribute it to a failing charger that overloaded the battery and did not stop loading when it was already overheating.
A long story but just a warning to you all out there handling batteries and chargers!
Which are probably nearly all of us.
Never leave charging batteries unattended and ideally never charge in your house or appartment but outside where there is ample room if something fails!
I was just extremely lucky because I have been ignorant of the dangers all the time before, charging batteries without supervision.
So take care. And have a great season!
