I have exactly the same set up pal.

Because the central bar on the RP1 is stupidly short, I basically put the rods into grips immediately behind the reel seat, and this in turn make's it easy to press when you pick the rod up.

Japanese shrink handle mate, I'm sure I use the medium size as there is a smaller insert for blank carbon.

That's good to hear

Out of interest are your rods bare blank where they sit in the grips? I'm wondering if cork/other materials are gripped better.
I guess length of rod in front of alarm can also affect pressure at the grip, pivot points etc.

So I have a RP1 pod with all Jag back rests and the rod lockers as said.

Last week I was fishing into a corner with a large reed bed and several large snags (downed trees etc) the spot tight to the right, about 15 yards out and about a rod length from the reeds.

As such I was fully locked up, the only addition was a single snag ear on the right of the alarm. I had found fish in that corner, so was sat well back in the swim so minimise any chances of spooking them, within 30mins I had a vicious take and the first thing the fish did was go for the snags, the entire set up didn't budge it all stayed rock solid.... after a swift battle where my end tackle was solid enough that I didn't have to give any line i managed to bring the fish into open water and land.

Not the first time I've been in that situation but the setup gives me full confidence that the rod wont move on a take.

I keep looking at the Jag Rod Lockers, so temtped. I use the Jag butt rests but I wouldn't consider them for anything other then near flattish rod fishing towards a rig re gripping. I'd imagine if you weren't pointing your rods at you rigs a fish could lift the rod out at the likes of a right angle to the rig. I have the P1s too and while great a bare blank can slip, never had a rod pop out though, but I suppose it could happen as it's not impossible, unlike with modern fully captive designs.

Jag for me, butt rests and rod lockers. Stupid money but they will last a lifetime and the setup is absolutely rock solid. Fish tips up, locked up, nothing will move, expensive but gives me total confidence my rods aren't going anywhere no matter how I fish.

I now have jag butt rests with the rod lockers they work like a dream for me.. i found that the closer to the reel seat the better imo, give less chance of them lifting from the butt rests, however with the addition of the rod locks it pretty much eliminates this.

Only downside is the price which to be honest is scandalous. And before these I used the esp butt grips and they were also fantastic for a fraction of the price.

Any butt rest combined with the Jag rod lockers, absolute solid and trust these with braid locked up

Found the Jag butt tests to grip better than p1 but they are against a bare blank so may be different with abbreviated or shrink handles.

Same, ESP are solid.

Had the Jag (also had rods pop out of them) and Solar but the ESP is cheap, no faff and does the job perfectly.

Nash but lucks I’ve always used, never had a fish manage to pull the rods out even when fishing tighter clutches with tips up

Having tried the JAG (fiddly to change inserts and rods would pop out if fishing tips up) and Solar P1s (generally good but rods could slide forward) I have settled on the ESP mini's.
Far cheaper than the others so no drama buying two sizes and hold the rod firmly against pressure from any angle.

I use these (the normal version) with two sets of abbreviated handle rods.

More than happy with them.

Nash butt lock, also now sell an "xtreme" version..

i've never had any issues with the regular version opening up, I switch between rods for river / short / long distance still waters and don't have to mess about adjusting them which is great.

+1 for Solar P1 - I've had Jag Lockdowns and didn't particularly like them - to much faff with inserts / adjustability . .I use P1s with Neville Ball pegs whipped behind the reel seat on all my rods; this helps rods being dragged forward on a tight clutch but won't stop the reel catapulting upwards in the event of a savage take etc

However for rivers I'd also be considering either a Jag Rod locker or PB Bungee Rod lock in addition to your preferred but rest . . . alternatively if fishing rod tips up why not go barbel style and use but cups; job done (Custom Angling Solutions do some sexy perforated ones - or you could source some OG Solar Stainless at vast expense!)

Solar p1 centre locs are really good, much more adaptable than jag if using different rods and I found them less of a faff all round

I use the jag rod lockers. Not cheap but looks nice and works great. Takes some muscle memory to get use to releasing them on a take or everything goes flying. Not that that happened to me at all

I'm starting a river campaign and am looking for recommendations for some locking butt rests that will lock the rods in solid.

Thanks in advance.
