Embarrassingly, we're only middle aged, so there's no excuse.

You're temple steps look quite challenging for anyone to be honest. Add in the heat & altitude
etc - it must have been a mission.

Those monkeys are so cheeky. I haven't experienced it myself, I've seen the documentaries though. It's funny that the monk had a stick to fend them off. I wonder what Buddha would have to say about that?

Anyway, yes, black tea mugs are gross!

the Mrs has just said that'd be us!

Blue John mines, the Mrs chopper brakes all but failed on the way there

Wat Tham Suea, Thailand was our Blue John...1200 steps, prob 1:3 and some of the steps were taller than Mrs VS knees...we made the 1st flight. The 40 deg temps didn't help....that's my excuse anyway

LINKY POO™ https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-1237-steps-to-the-top-of-the-mountain-buddhist-temple-tiger-cave-wat-76987577.html

Edit, Mrs V adds, we gave up, went down, had ice cream and the monkey tried to pinch hers 🤣 My memory, trinket stall manned by monk, monkey lands on roof then its arm comes round and tried to grab something, said monk was ready with a great big stick!

It all started with black tea cups

Yeah I can see why a ti cup would be handy but I just can't help myself...!

It reminds me of when me & Mrs Clonker went to the Peak District a few years back. We decided to go to a blue john mine that we hadn't been to before & on the website it didn't look too much of a walk to get to. Well, once we got there we realised it was quite a steep & long walk up the zig zagging concrete steps to get up to the entrance. We were running late so we rushed up the steps as fast as we could so we didn't miss the time slot. That's when we realised just how unfit we were at the time. I honestly felt like I was going to have a heart attack but I kept pushing forwards with my heart leaping from my chest knowing that if I stopped I wouldn't be able to get going again. I finally made it nearly to the top & stopped on a bench - I thought I was going to die. Mrs Clonker was lagging behind in tears & I whimpered words of encouragement to her in between palpitations & seeing stars.

Finally she caught up & we got to the entrance just in the nick of time! We entered & soon realised the place was completely empty.. The tour guide laughed & said we were the only ones booked in that morning & it wouldn't have mattered if we were late..

To rub salt into the wounds the cave was the worst we've ever been to.

Thankfully we're both much fitter now. We still regularly reminisce & laugh about it.

Never again.

In my defense and ti's I used to do a lot of hill walking where lack of weight can help, but tbh I'd be fitter with a heavier pack...hmmm

yeti mugs all the way.

brilliant kit - not only do they keep your tea hot, they also keep your booze cold the wine tumbers are brilliant for fishing tea cups.

virtually indestructible too - proper buy-it-for-life items.

I've got to ask, why? If your tasty beverage is so hot it burns your lips why would you want it anywhere near your tongue or masticatory mucosa*?

I was gong to say cheeks but thought better of it

Reminds me of molten cheese from a pizza, that stuff is like napalm

Jack is right Goose, the problem lies in choice of words. Brewing (your brewed) is the process of making the wort which is then fermented to make the beer you drink.

In the old days after fermentation the beer was either casked and sent on its way to be drunk immediately (relatively 'green beer') or it was held back and 'conditioned/matured' in wooden barrels until 'ready'.

Wooden barrels for beer are a thing of the past most likely in the name of consistency, everyone want their pint to be the same as the last. Stainless also outlasts wood, there are very few coopers left, very sad.

Every now and then a speciality beer will be made, aged in wooden casks, to say impart a bourbon flavour, think Innis & Gunn is one of the top of my head.

I was a very keen home brewer. One thing I hate in beer, crystal malt in all but the smallest amounts, it gives the beer a really metallic taste (to me)

If you want to know how far beer companies will go to ensure consistency, consider this. They'll remove all trace minerals from the water used and then add back in what they want to get the results they want. If say you want to make a particular 'style' of beer you can go online and find the profile of the water you need. In the case of beers like Peculiar it tasted like it did because of the water used in that area to a good degree, obv lots of other factors in play, vip being yeast. Believe it or not in Eurooe the taste could differ by which water well they used, even a few hundred yards apart!

All fascinating stuff

Theakston Old Peculier is a dark ale that is brewed in wooden casks. It is a well-known and award-winning beer that is sold worldwide.

Wasn't and never has been, as said conditioned mature beer/ ale/ larger will all go through a process similar to what I have already mentioned. The term brew encompasses the full process not the storage of conditioned beer in a final storage medium.

Wooden casks were used until the 50's now a days its extremely rare in "Real Ale" or any form of beer as the risk of infection, and chance for dissolved oxygen absorption is so much higher. and metal is more re-suable and available.

I worked for the second biggest brewery in the uk for several years and have a CIBD certificate in brewing.

Real ale was and I believe is still brewed in wooden casks and served from hand pumps not like your larger and other chemical carbonated stuff.

A quite peculiar response seeming as you age spirits in wood for the specific aim of tainting it to impart flavour.

And beer is not brewed in wooden casks - it will be brewed in a stainless or copper kettle, fermented in a stainless tank, then matured in another stainless tank. Occasionally certain beer will be matured further in bottles or casks

And for the tea connoisseurs amongst us look for hand rolled tea if you can get it, keeps much more of the essential oils and flavour compounds compared to the chopped stuff in tea bags.
Proper tea company is my choice if i feel like spending a small fortune other then that its Yorkshire Tea for me. Carplife insulated mug (no lid), scalded and wiped out before every brew washed a few times a year.

No alcoholic beverage worth drinking is aged in stainless steel ie whiskey, brandy . Even reel beer was always brewed in wooden barrels.

Used to work with a bloke who had a white mug and drank black tea, his mug never got washed and by the time he retired the inside was coated in about 3mm of what looked like black limescale. It stopped anyone pinching his mug.

There's only a few companies that make plastic free tea bags, clipper is one., I wasn't keen on the one I tried and the bags aren't cheap which is why its not been adopted mainstream

Fairly sure there was a study recently that showed 6000 microplastic particles per bag.
There was also a article showing microplastics in various Pacific sourced fish cell nucleus!
And worse still a article linking lung cancer in none smoking 20 year old with their lungs illuminated like a bright city at night from above, under scanning. The same is showing up in the massive rise of colon cancer in the younger generations.

It's believed they leak chemicals into the cell nucleus and it alters/damages the dna causing mutations ie, cancer.

@21, mould ain't so bad

Edit...6000...yeah :-0

My mate Dean was the dirtiest sod ever on the banks of the Ebro you always took your own mug to his swim as he just used to swill the cups out in the river which was @ times 1 up from a cesspit of bacteria ...he did 2yrs living on the bank and never had a bad stomach !!!!!
just a shame couldn't be said for the poor idiots who went into his swim for a cuppa and some inside knowledge on how the river was fishing we used to sit there laughing thinking you wont be fishing tomorrow mate sometimes it was hard to keep a straight face when he said it was Segra tea...he now makes a comfortable living working for a medicinal company as basically a human guinea pig testing drugs ...true story

I drink far too much tea, like it quite strong, love Thompsons Signature, just wish it was available as loose leaf, the thought of these microplastics doesn't sit easy with me to the point I've been making a effort to drink more coffee.

Its a win win situation, isn't it.. it was only a while back that I realised t bags were made of plastic. I wonder how much research has gone into finding out how much of that ends up in your body.. A bit of tea staining round a mug I think is the least of our worries.

Did a little googling on that last night, seems stainless hip flasks were very much frowned upon at first but it seems to be agreed it was a bit of a myth. Given so many alcoholic beverages are made/aged in steel it's hard to imagine it to be anything but a myth.

@55 I've got the twin walled titanium, I'm forever burning my lips as the ruddy thing won't cool down quick enough

I only drink tea, hate coffee and am a massive snob regards cups.

Ideally for me would be the simple home mug, it holds just the right amount of water and feels comfortable to drink from, but could break mid session which would be a disaster on the scale of a Russian nuke so have travelled through a myriad of Carpy cups

Ridge Monkey plastic thing - it’s like being 4 again drinking from a sippy cup - hold far to much water, goes from hotter than the sun for 10 mins to ice in the next 30 seconds, horrid on the lips.

Titanium - right size but horrid on the lips and goes cold by the time you stir the poxy thing.

Stainless - bearable but just a little on the small side.

Yeti (I assume stainless also) has been with me the past 18 months and it is my current favoured choice. I only fill 3/4, keeps drinks hot for just long enough and is ok to drink from - it was also far too expensive for what it is (birthday present) so was reassuringly expensive.

Maybe on my new paywall channel I will create a sub channel called pubchucking drinking vessels as a £5 bolt on.

In my youth many of the old guys in the tweed brigade carried hip flasks and all were anti full stainless and most hip flasks then were glass with a removable stainless base as Nd the upper coated in leather.

You know, in 35+ years of fishing & camping I don't ever think I've taken a regular mug (other than my good self )
Early days Thermos with plastic cup lid, then stainless insulated, now Ti. Think it probably came from the thought of breaking it, who knows, funny creatures of habit!

In 20 years in the food industry, where stainless steel is the main material used in equipment, i have never herd once of it tainting a product.

And you are 100% correct about the porcelain. On a visit to twinning's tea years ago, during a being shown how a tasting session works they explained pretty much the same and that there were not taints in porcelain and hold a consistent heat.

Genuinely porcelain is very good insulator as it absorbs very little heat and keeps you brew hot. Stainless steel cups and hip flasks taint the flavour of the contents.

All my stuff is bought home put in sink with hot water and dishes then washed and put away if the cup is stained I bleach it out and then rinse it out an hour later, also when I’m on the bank I have sanitizer, wipes and clean everything to an acceptable level helps keep vermin away while in the bank.

A little bit of staining is acceptable but I've seen what you are describing and it's disgusting.
Do your best to wipe your cup when you are on the bank but give it a good clean when you get home, some diluted bleach does wonders.

Agreed, also extends to grim ridgemonkeys and frying pans. By all means use a wet wipe to remove the fat/grease on the bank but first step getting indoors is always cleaning the cooking kit including the mug

Since when did having an absolutely disgusting, black stained tea cup on the bank become some sort of weird badge of honour?

"Look how badass I am and how much tea I've drank!"
translation...
"My mummy doesn't come with me to do my washing up. You should see the state of my botty"!

You know who you are! You're animals!
