i personally think the 19s or 20s are the better of the basia models. the sld has 87cm line retrieval and also don't hold enough line for continental stuff. the 19's come with shallow and deep spools(20 doesnt) with a line retrieval of 104cm and you really do feel the difference bringing in rigs from distance. i'd then go next down to the qdx which has the bearings in the handle over the silver qd model so doesn't clunk about looks smart, weights less than the 19 / 20 models. then sld, qd

It's a luxury but if you have the money why not. I have a set of basia customs dcr6 and a set of basiair z45s, the customs are fantastic reels but the z45 are the real deal and are special.

If you do, be very very careful! I've been looking for 2nd set of 3 XTs for about 6 months and have wasted so much time on numerous people thinking they have a good set but have actually got dogs. There's a particular Facebook seller who sells loads of gear and has tried to pull the wool over my eyes on 3 sets.

There was one almost mint set with spools but the guy wanted mega money. One worn drive or pinion gear and you have a useless reel that you cant get spares for. I love mine but 20 years and 5 services, and they're clinging on, but only just!

I needed a bail arm screw for one last week, cost me £18!!

I’ve thinned down my spare kit so don’t want to be without reels until the correct set came along.

What’s stopping you selling the Basias and buying another set of 10K XTs? Still plenty about.

Got a set of Basia 45 QDX’s which are basically the original Basia’s but in black and without the annoying clicking handle.

I have no idea of the amount of different Basia designation since I bought them, must be at least 6 updates since then 😲

I’m reasonably happy with them but would swap in a heartbeat for a set original shimmy Technium 10,000XT’s. I had a set of 4 minters that I stupidly sold.

Which reel is designed for a fish to use rather than anglers?

Lol you knew I'd bite - top dangling!

An SLD is NOT a Basia Air Z tho is it? (apols if my boy racer car analogy was lost on you) If it was that great a product why are there so many silly confusing variants with what are effectively go faster stripes on them . . .designed for anglers rather than fish methinks!

Point is both do a job - the difference when casting for, or landing a big fish effectively and enjoyably is negligible - just sayin!

Sorry, id had a few beers last night and couldnt help myself. Glad you appreciated the post though.

Not quite sure how a basia sld is a poor mans basia, but im open to being educated. And not sure what your reference to golfs is all about, but thank you.

Are you on commission for carbon washers?

And you can buy a set of emblems, that need no upgrades, that operate as well as, but smoother than your tournies. So have a look at the maths on that. Then you can buy even more bait. (Carbon washers are optional on the emblems)

Yawn - just some points of detail / facts

1 - I am old(ish)skool and was fishing in 1995 when the og Tournies were released. I'd rather pretend to look newskool at my age

2 - RRP Daiwa 45 SLD = £559.99 / Carbon Washers £3.99 = £563.98

3 - RRP Daiwa 5000T = £279.99. QD £19.99 / Carbon Washers £8.99 / Line Clip £9.99 / Worm Shafts £31.49 = £350.45

4 - £563.98-£350.45 = £213.53. 3x £213.53 = £640.59 saving to spend on bait / hookers / cocaine - that's also only £80 more than a single Basia SLD

5 - Good luck with your poor mans Basias! Its a bit like buying a 1.4 Golf TSI with a splitter on the front over a Stage 3 Remapped R32 - they do look the same so nobody will know

6 - Its only fishing

Never owned any other Basia’s but I do like my SLDs. You can save a lot on them by buying them from fishernator.

I have a set, mine have had 2 seSns of fishing a lake with dirt banks, and everytime it raisn, its splashes up all over them. And have been submerged in dirty silty water numerous times, and are still smooth as silk.
Solid reels. Bit of a luxury, but of you have the money, why not.

Or convince yourself that a set of less smooth, and less refined reels are better, and spend nearly as much on them, qnd pretend you look old school

Hello

I have always wanted a set of Daiwa Basia reels and I am going to buy some soon.

There are so many different models available but which one is the one to go for?

I really like the look of the Daiwa 45 SLD.
