Was thinking I stick with the Jag then - I'm used to it after all and know just how much pressure to apply. Use beaked hooks exclusively for barbel which are arguably easier to hone (single direction) its just that recasting into rivers every 20-30mins over a sesh def seems to blunt them much more quickly . . .

Loads of options for sharpening, I like a vallorbe tapered fine file but I've got hands like a goalkeeper and don't like the dainty little tools sold for the job.

The nice thing with the jag is the smooth sides, so it doesn't cut into the vice or whatever you hold the hook with, decent value tool imo, I just prefer the tapered shape as the hooks I use most require a curved stroke. Judging by the jag description "made by a world leading Swiss file manufacturer" it's likely vallorbe making the jag one anyway

I always give a final tickle with a nagura stone now, makes a big difference in how long it takes for a hook to rust, probably wouldn't make a difference barbel fishing tho

It's alright, but far less coarse than the jag file. Plus it's a lot bigger. I have one in my catfish kit which is fine to use on those bigger hooks. Not sure I'd want to use it on smaller carp hooks, it will be awkward

Saw that before but is it any good compared to the Jag? Jag has a ribbed surface - that looks like sandpaper ?

I wouldn’t say it was more compact or particularly cheaper but a better product to replace the jag file is a Swiss pillar cut 4 jewellery file . Lasts longer and wider body which I find easier to use

Have had the Jag hook sharpening 'set' since release and to be honest rarely use the stones in preference of the SP Max file that seems to do the 'quick touch up' job perfectly.

Need one for my barbel set up but was wondering if there's anything equally good / better / more compact cheaper out there before I simply buy another?
