yeah I'm pretty sure. when Rob Hughes looked at his rigs on one of his underwater escapades it was the worst for laying out. obviously this is makes no difference to his catch rate but for a piece of mind I'd avoid the soft coated for casting.

Agreed mate, he has been using a kicker of late , but the 64lb common he caught called Butt Head was caught without the kicker. Just a KK.
I personally think the SlipD takes come beating when using a Wafter.

Not looking for the next fad, and have used nothing but a standard hair rig for 20+ years of carping but using alot more wafters now so wanted an option for whatever rig was best for them.
And the video I watched of his a few months ago he was using avid lign aligner / kicker on his hair rigs?

his rigs are dropped from a bait boat. soft coated rigs are pretty terrible for casting unless your hitting the clip just before the rig enters and in shallow water.

Have a look at the rig Simon Crow just caught a 64lb Common on, knotless knotted braided hooklink (no coating) with no kicker etc. This guy catches a lot of fish and uses the most basic of rigs. We all disappear up our own arses when we ain’t catching due to media and information overload.

a friend uses the size 5 TA straight eye and it balances a 13mm crushed cork thing that mark does, but I think making rigs specific to a hookbaits is a mistake, I like my intended bait to be just over buoyant and trim down as opposed to try and match hook to finished bait personally, as they all vary a bit.
gardner trick link and thinking anglers think link are another level but I'd have a soft spot for amnesia booms, weirdly I've never liked it with a knotless knot though? 25lb version I used ot use

A plain braid knotless knotted line aligned hooklink with a Gardner Mugga or Solar 101, usually a size 4.

Ok if your fishing over a clean bottom. Personally use the slip d and German. Mainly use a semi stiff coated braid like esp tungsten loaded hooklink

I’m also a big fan of the longer d-rig. A decent mono or flouro, an out turned eye hook and a ring and you’re sorted.

I've done well on simple long d rigs
used germans, noodles etc, they all work I try to match the rig to the baiting scenario I have infront of me

After 35 years carping the German is the only bottom bait rig I use now. 15lb Tungskin or the Turbo with a stiff Flouro depending how clean the bottom is.
The thing that catches most out isn't the rig its the bait, some wafters are just too light, big fish displace a lot of water just moving in for a feed, the hook never ends up in front of them, I overweight pop ups for the same reason. Again after 35 years of trying everything I only use either the HSR or the Ronnie now, hook link's as above.
Only use the one hook pattern to, hand sharpened Muggers only in a 4.
All bases covered with hook beads, hook swivels, one type of hook two types of hook link, swivels and a spool of bait floss, amazing how simplicity clears the mind and increases confidence.

About 4 to 5 inches of ESP Tungsten, size 6 hook with a kicker and a small bit of coating removed by kicker.

Multi rig with no hinge, so essentially a d rig where yiu can change the hook. I now use some variation of the multi rig for all of my carp fishing wether it be bottom bait, wafter or popup, saved me loads in hooklength materials

I was a massive fan of the German rig up until recently going back to a blowback rig with a coated braid with a section stripped back. The hook holds are so much better and seem to get a lot more pick ups with the blowback not knocking the German just can’t see me going back to it anytime soon
