I use an old emblem s 6000T, used it for years, it's been brilliant, and I've another spare, good as new. They really were a good reel.

I left my CFX S&M rod along with a Wychwood dispatch spod reel up the Jubilee last year. First time I’ve ever done anything like that. Ever. Did not like the Whychwood, the bail arm was not all that.
I looked at getting a new spod reel trade. Because there is no margins in reels, trade is nearly as much as RRP.
I got a Shimano Beastmaster 7000 off fleabay. The sticker around the spool was starting to lift. Paid £20 for it. Absolutely perfect for the job. Great bail arm, fast retrieve. Ripped the stupid spool sticker off. Lush.

Ive used an original emblem spod since they came out and never once had a problem there bullet proof. If it aint broke dont try to fix it. I dont carp fish anymore but now use it for spoppers on the trent so its constantly chucking out up to 12 ounces now and still performs the same as the day i got it, cant ask for anymore than that.

Had my emblem Spod since they came out and it’s never missed a beat. Might be time for a service now?!

In reply to Post #24 In the market to replace my Wychwood spod reel as it also ceases up. Had it apart several times to try and fix but it keeps happening so need to get rid of

In reply to Post #19 My wychwood seized up after 9 months use. Just bought a shimano ultragra after reading this thread
It depends on the salt content in the waters your on I suppose.....

I have two emblem Spod reels not had a problem, a mate ditched his infinity bait runners and has 9 of them.

In reply to Post #20 Yes my emblem spod is over 10 years old and has been very good, the only issue if you can call it an issue is i have bent the bail arm a couple of times through my own misuse, quick bend back into place and away it goes again

In reply to Post #20 Me neither and I've completely hammered mine over the years.

In reply to Post #17 That is a strange one with the emblem, I'd guess its got a bent bail arm as I've not had that ever.
The aerlex on the other hand.........

In reply to Post #18 Funny I've never had one reel ever seize up since i started fishing as a wee boy. Them wychwood spods have taken some serious abuse, getting dunked in water every session Ive used etc as well. may my luck continue

In reply to Post #17 Had two wychwood spod reels and had they both seize solid.
I’ve got the cross cast spod reel and had no issues with it.

In reply to Post #14 Reels are personal choice and I think the Daiwa Emblem spod is a marmite thing. Each to their own.
However I'm really surprised you had this problem with the bail arm. The reel has a cast lock mechanism to prevent this and I have never had it happen in years of use. Also fitted with the auto cast button to ensure perfect pickup.

I use a shimano ultegra spod reel very good and such a work horse

In reply to Post #1 I use a Shimano XTA 7000 spod reel on both my 9ft and 12ft set ups.
Does the job and although discontinued, it can be picked up off ebay from time to time for about 50-70 pound.

Had an emblem spod, hated it, heavy cumbersome thing which if the bailarm wasn't I the perfect place snapped back over on some casts resulting in a crack off or two.
Had the wychwood dispatch, quite good for the money, little niggly thing like handle coming lose every other cast though.
That got stolen and I've just bought an avid xr spod marker reel and yet to loaf it with braid but has a massive 138cm retrieve!...feels pretty solid and well made only time will tell if it lasts. I paid 60 quid from go outdoors.

In reply to Post #1 Daiwa emblem spod reel. Had 2 for prob 10 years now. Other than a bent bail arm which I did they have been faultless.

In reply to Post #1 Hello,
What spod reel would you use with a 9 foot rod?
|
|
|
In reply to Post #9 The 6500 is better than the Shimano for its waterproofing, though the Shimano is better on the retrieval, the Shimano being 124mm Vs the Penn 107mm, oh, and the Shimano is lighter too.

In reply to Post #1 I've used the old Daiwa Emblem spod reel for ages now - has good line-lay, so it casts well and mine gets a lot of use, often has crap all over it - especially when spoding over zigs and it just keeps on trucking. I'm sure there are better reels out there for spodding, but mine is very reliable, does the job, so no reason to upgrade/change it. Would probably look to the new Emblem spod or Ultegra reel if I did. A couple of mates have those and seem happy...

In reply to Post #1 Ultegra spod is smoother lighter and has a better retrieve than the Daiwa, better line lay as well… I have both but if the other daiwa breaks will certainly replace it with the shimano, much better reel IMO

In reply to Post #2 Same... does the job

I agree with the others, Ultegra Spod they have 3 line clips and will take the abuse, I found the ultegra much nicer to use than the Diawa

In reply to Post #1 Had the daiwa spod reel a few years, had lots of use for carp and pike spombing very good always

In reply to Post #1 Ultegra spod gets my vote as well, quality workhorse reel. It will last u ages u wont have to worry

In reply to Post #1 Shimano ultegra spod reel...excellent for the job, and very good retrieval rate, which helps if spombing at range ...

In reply to Post #1 wychwood dispatch, cheap and cheerful. used it for 4+ years now still going strong.

Looking for recommendations for a quality spod reel, one that will take a lot of stick & braid friendly line clip
Thanks
