I’ve been using the Emblem 23 45SCW for a year now and never had line go behind the spool once. Assume it must only be a problem on the 35 model?
Was considering getting a set of Crosscast 35’s myself for a set of lighter rods.

Imo you would be better off with the crosscast 35... I considered the emblem before the crosscast and for the extra money it wasn't worth it... I've had zero trouble with line going behind the spool on the crosscasts

Daiwa emblem.. gold, black, blue, spod, whatever
The line guard makes them perfect for what you want.
The spod is a bit fast (gearing) but still capable and available new.
I'd get some used emblem s or x
Or infinity br

the basia doesn't have any line guard system, cant imagine using them is a good idea. okumas could be an option for you
only reason I got put off okuma is the servicing guys who basically said the internals are crap. guess it depends what your looking for quality wise.

Just to say I decided to pass on the 35 SCW - I'm seeing a lot of negative feedback and also for other Daiwa reels that are in their current line up - and that's across several forums, not just on here. I'll be fishing open bail, so if there's issues with line getting behind the spool, it'll be a big problem for me when pike fishing. I'd add that you shouldn't have to modify reels to make them do what they should do out of the box. All I want is three big pits for pike fishing that I can leave on the rods - meaning I don't have to keep swapping out my Basias from my distance carp rods.

A mate is lending me his Shimano Ultegra 14000 XTD's at the weekend, I'll see if they're any good. At this rate, I might just use my Basias for pike fishing and be done with it.

Glenn, reels received, to be put in use saturday...what i would say is the rubber resting on spool lip does create some extras noises.. like having tournies again

but i can live with that , if you want any pics in case your interested DM me

Line guards are great with emblem and tournies the only mechanism that actually works however you will still have to manage line the skirt based guides such as the Shimarno (all of them) and the likes of the ISO and Linear X are poor. It is user error imo these 35s look extremely poor due to the tapered fall back which I can only think would make matters worse.

For a moment yes but realised too much would have to be taken off for them to fit .

Glenn...Currently have these reels with FAF Customz as they have said they have done this modification on other reels. I am getting the line guard modified. Basically line guard is removed and they are replacing with the rubber guards that go in the recess where the line guard would move up and down. I have been told will get them back before next weekend so ill test and let you know the outcome .

You might find them easy for current models, or the old models. But wait until the latest offerings which are replaced every year or 2 need parts. Bet you'll struggle then

Shimano parts I find are very easy to source, Daiwa not so. Servicing I do myself, well apart from my stupid mag sealed Castizms, which I gave up on and have now sent off to be sorted out. The Penn was more expensive from memory, but yeah, totally unfounded decision, but I just didn't like the look and feel of them. I've used Penn multipliers, which were very decent.

Parts and servicing will be the same as any modern Shimano or daiwa at worst, ie not a lot. Having owned the Penn's and now having the 45 for the reels you are considering, I know what the better reel is. And if I'd not made a balls up and ordered the reel seats too small on my rods, I'd still be using them.

I just thought they looked a bit naff. I know it's not a reason for discounting them, but when I handled one in the shop, I just thought, I don't like this. I don't know what part/servicing availability would be like, I guess I just prefer to stick with Shimano or Daiwa. The only other brand I use is ABU, but that's for multipliers and I am currently swapping them all out for Shimano Tranx reels.

Appreciate the tip on the washers, I'd planned to do that based on advice given.

Thanks!!

I think you've made a good choice mate overall. one thing you definitely need to do is change the washers to the felt ones from Weston developments. game changer.

forgot to add I have folding handles on mine, which I much prefer for transportation. They are taken from the daiwa black emblem x 5000t

Thanks again folks - plenty of good feedback.

Line behind the spool issues aside, I'm feeling OK about getting a set. Like I said, I only want them for piking on the pits and needed deep spools, as I'll be using a bait boat a fair bit - I have custom Basias for my carp distance work. It's all my fault anyway, as I had the old big baitrunners for pike fishing and sold them, doh.

Thanks again for the pricing tip - although I prefer to get them from J/Ross and pay a little more - as if there's a problem, I can nip over to them in my lunch hour.

I did look at the Penn reel - but didn't like it. The other cheapish big pit reel was a Ultegra 14000 XTD? Those flimsy bail arms look like I'd bend them when carrying the rods on a sling and I know a couple of people who've had problems with theirs - I think the quality control at Shimano is a bit hit and miss by all accounts.

Thanks again everyone

Well you must be something really special then because it seems like it happens to everyone else It is however the users fault but these are the worst I've ever experienced for it. It never happens to me when using or on the rests but happens all the time when the rod is propped up and re baiting.

Ive got 3 on my 10 footers and i actually quite like them

Just a heads up though.........line going behind the spool is the users fault ive got 20lb x line on mine which is horrendous stuff but i dont think it has ever happened to me

my other sets of reels are both xsb mags so i actually find these excellent and have no issues with line behind the spool at all

Had both reels, cant for the life of understand why they dont use decent guards to stop this happening,. IP mentioned the penns, ive never used them but lots say they great.
The Daiwas are super smooth and well balanced I had flouro on mine and it doesnt behave nicely on any spools . They do get line behind the spool especially flouro as its a bit springy.
Dare i say for the money a set of tournies 2nd hand, at least they have functioning line guards and can take a few knocks. but they are not loved by all...

To actually answer your question i think the line gets behind the spool mostly while the line is "loose" like when settling the rods in rests , I always keep a finger on it and you shouldnt have many problems.

If you do decide to buy them you can save a few quid by getting them from Gooutdoors and price matching them from Johnson Ross. They will beat the 129.99 by 10% with their price match guarantee.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Is the issue with line getting behind the spool happening when casting, reeling in or when preparing to cast or setting up the reel on the rests?

The reason for looking at these was the alternative I was looking at, the Ultegra 14000 XTD, had so many mixed reviews.

Making me re-think what to get. I already have custom Basias, but want some big pits for pike fishing that'll take the knocks and don't really want to spending too much. I get that a £150 reel won't be too amazing, but surely they'd be at least 'good'.

Thanks again.

Agree with this 100% , felt washers make it much better but the line does go under the spool. which is a shame as apart from that cant fault them. such a shame because getting to point now I've had enough of it. i was thinking of possibly trying to modify them. get rid of line guard completely and put some rubber strips in the recess like other reels do. probably not worth the hassle and would also need to add some washers for line lay. if anyone does know of anything that can be done id love to know

Great reels when fitted with felt washers but the worst reel I've ever used for line going behind the spool.

Very impressed with mine. I should say though I've only had them a few months first impressions are good, especially for the price.

I paid about 110 a reel with a price match at GoOutdoors.

Can't say I've experienced any issues with line going behind the spool but in regards to seizing up, I guess only time will tell!

A lad I know has them, or should or I say had them. He's just got rid of them. One siezed up after a few nights use, and he kept having line get in behind the spool on a regular basis. He was less than impressed

About to pull the trigger and get three of these - going to use them primarily for pike fishing on large pits, so didn't want anything too special, just something robust that does the job.

Anyone have these reels? Any feedback good and bad?

Just want to sense check before I get them.

Thank you so much
