Only just found this thread, hello Pete!
Lad from Leciester way was probably "CarpMaster"
Lee the meat guy was Lee Chandler. Good bloke...
I never done any northern socials...but the Farlows ones were memorable, I will have to try and dig some pics out
Click images to pop them to new/bigger window
WaterBeach social 4 Oct 2002

Fen Drayton - 25 Nov 2002 with Jim Shelley and a slide show in a big army tent

Taff, Jim, Neil, Pete

Muzza, Jim, Neil

more of the same, but bonus Cam and Sam in that shot
Bassingbourne - 15 Aug 2003

I might dig out more sometime...if I find the shot of Conway with the inflatable I will share it
As for organising more of these for the future, do you really think that's wise!?
EDIT: Just found a load of pics on the CarpForum page on Facebook...including CarpManConway and the inflatable sheep

In reply to Post #88 Good times Nick, remember them fondly. We could write a book on those two Boysaway trips alone. I also remember you forgot your passport and had to drive all the way home to collect it. I can't believe that was 16 years ago. The van trip on the first visit was a major experience. Me and Dean talking utter drivel about Gibbon Hairdressers and Olympic underwater goat formation swimming teams. We all caught carp and had a good laugh along the way. Its what it should all be about.
Thank you to the Carpforum, because without it, these trips would never of happened.
All the best mate, Paul.

Hi All
2008 for me
Met some absolute legends and characters on here, learnt a lot and I've hopefully given a lot back as well.
Miss certain members who've been sadly banned, mostly for their lost knowledge
I know the mods might delete this, but big shout out to Skear, probably the most argumentative tosser a man could come across, but boy did he know his ****!! True carper and one of the originals
Best

In reply to Post #87 Oh yes, the infamous Boysaway trips.
The first one involved me and Mark Hadley driving a very rammed van which on the way back smelt so bad it made us retch when we got back in. On the night of the storm you and I stayed to fish while the rest tried to watch Liverpool somewhere. We both caught and then listened to the punching, the vomitting, a dog being showered and then a certain Welshman falling in the lake
I remember the Grassy you lost that jumped close in and catching my first 20. Also Deano and others building a bait island on the bottom lake which lead to his nice common.
Of course on the other hand myself and another Welshman ended up in a right state on the second trip. I seem to recall pulling him out of the lake before waking up very ill in my bivvy
I still have the scars on my back where I fell into the trees.
You and I both caught Cut Tail that trip, my first 30 and the lad I gave a lift from Hastings caught his only fish on the last day after lots of attempts. As we left after our breakfast roll we managed about a mile before he was violently ill.
Really enjoyed both those trips which were my first ones to France and learnt a lot from you Monkeyclimber

Joined Aug 2004, still lurk a bit to see what's going on. My memories are that I fished a battle carp match with Mark Hadley at cemex chertsey and also on a forum trip to Boysaway Carping in france with Mark Hadley, Dean Oram, Chunks & Brents. Good times.

In reply to Post #31 Haha Keith, the Merrington social was legendary. We had northern socials for about 10 years and made some friends for life. We did manage a reunion social in October just before we went into another lockdown and it took me 4 days to recover.

2006 here, so a newbi I guess

In reply to Post #78 I fished in the original carp forum carp match, fished a qualifier with slash and a few others at Thorpe lea and then made it to the final which was at Barston lake near Coventry. Think i won about 80 quid for coming 2nd.
Lost touch with the forums for a number of years.
Remember chatting with Boris and a few others back then

In reply to Post #66 I never knew he’d had a slap prior to my finding him in the lake!
Some good socials there pal, I did the Willows and Jim Shelley ones too. Did anyone actually bother with bivvies or did we all just kip in that barn at the JS social? I was pulling straw out of my sleeping bag for months afterwards!

Joined in 2003 but forgot and then created this profile in 2004.
I was a Mod for a while and organised the infamous Farlows social where several memories stand out:
1) "Commoncarp" getting really drunk and starting aggro with one of the larger members who slapped him round the face.
2) CommonCarp then being pulled out of the freezing lake by Freedi and stood in the lukewarm shower for ages. Im sure Freedi saved his life.
3) Daz Conway falling asleep pissed so we dressed him up with all the cleaning lit including a mop. I still have a photo of Boo licking his face.
4) Playing poker with a big group and winning
5) I didn't bring any fishing gear as I knew id get no chance so me and my brother Tich bivvied up at the back of the lodge. Next morning I woke up and wondered why it was so bright, turned out to be snow. Then I heard Tich throw up. Turned out he's zipped up his sleeping bag and couldn't undo it quick enough so threw up in his sleeping bag cover.
6) Chris Cook and another Chris had their tackle stolen. We'd already left but the manager of Farlows was obnoxious about it all. The site was meant to be locked and patrolled by the bailiffs who instead spent the whole weekend on the piss.
I also went to the social/comp at Bridges, Staplehurst and the one at Willows. There was also another one at a place in Cambs where it all kicked off when someone suggested the Mods leave to have their own meeting. Staplehurst made me laugh as a certain then Mod who was full of mouth (left to start another website) got caught without a licence by the EA.
Then there was the social at Wolverhampton with Jim Shelley.
I also fished in a couple of the knockout match things though can't remember the name of it for the life of me.
I remember when we had the Babes thread which funnily enough eventually got removed
Happy times and I went twice to Boysaway in France with people from the forum as well.

In reply to Post #52 It was Winter bay we were in, like you a massive walk from the car park! I remembered who I fished with, his name was Lee but I can’t remember his username (he’s probably posted in this thread )
I remember the Cromwell social. I had them feeding in the margins and got the only run on the morning of going home, but it went into the nature reserve behind and cut me off Carpmanconway spent ages trying to nab one after that as others were still there and I’d packed up pissed off. I remember the bait too, Maple-8 that had turned and gone all white. It smelled awesome.

In reply to Post #50 The fish were going mental in summer bay at horseshoe. Me and Carpman Conway ended up fishing right up the top of the lake a million miles walk from the club house either way we went 😂
Good times in the early year socials. Should definitely try and get one organised again when we can for old times sake

In reply to Post #49 Yes Greg, good times those mate!

In reply to Post #47 I can’t remember the lads name I fished with at Horseshoe, cockney fella who worked on the meat markets. Good lad. We were sat there waiting for the draw, watching loads of Carp head and shoulder over the far side and nobody else seemed to notice We managed to get over there and had a few between us.

In reply to Post #34 few good memeories for me were
****ing my ankle at farlows and driving home with left leg only
nicking a golf buggy
watching beave break not one but two bivvies whilst we dragged him across the gravel giving him gravel rash as his trousers came down
Lenny sleeping in his own piss
beave eating fahl's in the morning with cans of stella
geezer pretty much drowing in the lake until he was pulled out
who was the geezer with the mommoth porn collection on dvd at a social(that was a bit odd)
ahhhhh the good old days
|
|
|
In reply to Post #32 Ahh the good old days get pissed don't cast out think the bloke who fell in at farlows was thrown in by jay whilst most of us were playing poker in the bar 🍺🍺 Cambridge was either waterbrige or basingbourne. But good days so let's have a social 👍

In reply to Post #30 Yes now I think about it it was Chris and someone else that had their gear nicked while we were doing the raffle/socialising. Can’t remember who had the tree come down on their rods but remember they were fuming about it (understandably) and wanted compo from Farlows/CarpForum. Went home with the hump and won the new rods in the raffle

Still here 17 years on
Remember the social at Merrington, when Taff had a pee on mains powered electric Otter Fence while staggering back to his bivvy in the dark we me and VLT , We thought it had killed him
|
|
|
In reply to Post #26 Think it was Chris Cook that had gear nicked but my memory ain't great. Think the guy in the next swim was a bailiff and supposed to be keeping an eye on it.
|
|
|
In reply to Post #25 most of us were drunk....
i remember the lad that fell in at farlows.... that was also the one where Chris cook had his gear nicked...
Also - Barston golf club social was a good un - certain members "borrowing " a golf cart... and a few pompey fans ending up in the lake
What a great idea to have a socials at lakes with club houses
what ever happened to Andy (was called "pop up" previously and was a mod back in the day)?

In reply to Post #16 Done a couple of the Farlows ones. The one I remember most is the one where we had bad weather, I organised the raffle and before the raffle someone (I want to say Chris Cook for some reason?) had half a tree come down on top of their rods smashing them up. He won a new set of rods in the raffle
Another social I remember for the wrong reasons was the Cromwell social in 04/05. Didn’t have a sat nav back then so wrote the directions down from the AA route planner. Wrote the wrong motorway down, if i remember rightly I wanted M1 then A1 but I wrote down M1 A11 and ended up in Norwich not Nottingham
Many good laughs I’ve had at Socials and still fish with people I met through this forum
Pete, I’m sure me and you had a Battlecarp match at farlows match lake many years ago
