Yep, bs is BS
Buy braid by diameter. So where you would use 8 or 10lb mono, use .24-.30
That’s why I’ll happily use 60-80lb at .35ish to fish with

The diameters are super thin for the stated Bs, even compared to other 8 strand braids, its not surprising it breaks well below.
40lb daiwa is .24, 87lb whiplash 8 is .25

I was using Berkley Whiplash 8 in 30lb and had it snapped 3 times in 48 hrs?
I tested it and it breaks at 14lb! Since im now trying the 40lb which seems stronger.

Not sure if it is the slightly thicker diameter of my braid but don’t think I have had more than one tangle, bit of water splashed on beforehand and maybe a half distance cast to wet more of the line before going for a longer chuck.
Super Power braid by KastKing in 40lb, 0.30mm is the one I have been using.

That is EXACTLY what I wanted to hear. The whole reason I gave up with the whiplash and went back to mono

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised in that respect, the j braid has been very well behaved for me
I don't even bother wetting it now

What’s spoppering

Is it a typo or some secret river feeding method crossed between a spomb, Spod, or bait dropper

I use a £10 spool of 40lb braid from eBay and have done straight through to 130yds when required for a couple of years, not the thinnest but never snapped without reason.

Sounds very good to me that mate, 130yds, if I can get that I will be happy

The only thing that concerns me going back to braid are the tangles

Another for the J braid X8, in 49 or 58lb. It sounds a lot but it’s still thin, the b/s is overrated though.

As others have said, why not use a leader unless there’s a ban. I use a 50lb Armakord leader with 49lb J braid on the tidal Trent for spoppering and for putting out the Deeper Chirp - if I break off it’ll be the best part of 300 quid I’ll never see again so I have to be confident in it!

Power pro is the best braid I have ever used, but you pay for it. I use a £10 spool of 40lb braid from eBay and have done straight through to 130yds when required for a couple of years, not the thinnest but never snapped without reason.
The J Braid is going to be my next change when required In something near 30lb, with a braided leader circa 50lb.

Just spooled up and put a 50lb leader on it. If I can hit 100yds I will be happy

I've only used it on my lighter spod rod so far, I might put a 5oz breakaway lead that far but I'd struggle with a spod or rake, not much different with 30lb braid and a leader for me.
I might get the big beasty out soon for some pre baiting on a lake most are now using 10ft rods and a big chunk of the bank is out of bounds, see if I can still hit 140 in a crosswind after not casting over 80 in about 3 years

Update

Looked at quite a few.

Power Pro looks good, like how they have samples tied to the packet

Looked at quite a few others and went with the majority of feedback on here. J braid 8 strand in 40lb, has a 0.24mm diameter, see how I go with it. Might add a 50lb thicker leader

Hopefully I can lead around, spomb and do a bit of raking with this at decent range. The last braid I used for raking was Shimano Antares in 50lb, 50 yds max lol

Cheers for the feedback lads

Nice one lads

Interesting about the J braid breaking strain and diameter too

I see Gardner do one in 0.30mm diameter. Reckon this is what I should be looking for 0.030mm diameter,, 120yd straight through

50lb power pro will probably go 120 yards with a big spooled reel and heavy enough lead.
I’ve also got it in 65 and 80.. you’d be lucky to put 80lb 120 inches when it’s new

ive been using the jbraid all year in 40lb for spodding, it still seems quite thin but does cast very well but i also because of how thin it is i still use it with a leader.
If i wanted to try it without a leader i would go for the 58lb one at 0.28mm dia

Cheers Duggs, think they do something in the 30lb range which may be OK. Would rather get some genuine feedback from users on here rather than somebody trying to flog me something that they have in stock

Two for J braid

I called a couple of shops today to see what they have in, they have the J braid, apparently the 8 strand has a more round profile. Sounds better?

I’ve used braid before Chuffy. Ditched the marker rod. Over the last year I’ve just been using mono, no problems counting the lead down, not as sensitive as braid but still get a decent feel for the bottom. Zero problems with mono when spombing.

J braid is one, will have a look at some tomorrow

I use the 8strand j braid, I want to say 50lb but I don't think they do 50lb, so probably the 58lb version. I can't see it limiting your distance if your hitting that with 15lb mono. I only really use that heavy version to cope with the weed rake

I'lI refer you back to post #5 I use the 20lb but with a 50lb leader, if you want straight through I'm sure the 40lb would be adequate, just look at diameters and go by that rather than breaking strains

Blimey if you have been leading about with mono it's going to be a whole new world when you start doing it with braid

Bump.

Looking for some feedback from users

I usually use 15lb mono to a 50lb leader for spodding and leading around. A lake I’m fishing at the moment has some proper thick clumps of weed about where if you are in them you can break off with a lead and 15lb trying to free it

Is anybody using one braid for both spombing and leading around, say up to 120yds will be fine, straight through with no leader, I’m thinking 30 - 40lb?

Not 30lb whiplash, don’t like it. If anybody has any recommendations following use or is doing similar that would be appreciated. Don’t want to start shelling out £30 per spool for trial and error!

Anyone know the best braid to use without using a leader for spomb ?

Any reason you don't want to use a leader? A 2 rod length leader (when ready to cast will have the Spomb at the spigot & 2-3 turns round the spool itself) is more than enough to minimise crack off's on the cast ( unless you somehow still frap up). Using a thinner braid straight through is asking for crack off's tbh & stepping up to a thicker diameter will lower casting distance due to the increased diameter (& subsequent weight of the braid itself when wet).

I have found the Gardner kinetic spod braid very good, although to be honest I would personally, still use a leader when fishing at that sort of range.

It's a thicker braid think it's.30mm

I just use 50lb whiplash straight through and never had any problems fishing at range with a medium/ large spomb

Whether you use a leader or not I reckon the best braid is an 8 carrier one like Daiwa J Braid x8, casts better and doesn't need constantly wetting like the 4 carrier braids

you could use a thicker braid......probably 40lb whiplash or another
when i use a spomb to hit those distances i use 65lb whiplash leader and 20lb(.06) mainline

why dont you want to use a leader out of interest
