It's probably hitting the clip too hard and/or using unbalanced gear. For example I had a similar thing happen when I swapped over to a 13' Fox XT rod just to see what it was like, only casting 60 yards not giving it the big one, well I still managed to hit the clip so hard the braid snapped at the leader knot  went back to my 12 footer and obviously have tried not to do anything quite as daft since, if I'd been casting over 100 yards it probably wouldn't of happened, it's all relative

could have been, regards mono i had a complete set up that i left at my mates in france for years on the spod rod i had 10lb original fox soft steel (0.3mm) with a 65lb whiplash leader never once gave me a problem.
Id imagine most monos 0.28 upwards would be ok

It's been stripped now, but I always used the Green version too! Maybe a dodgy batch somewhere along the line?

berkley whiplash is chalk and cheese in different breaking strains, i once tried the 20lb green version many years ago it resulted in two unexplained breakages after that i used it in 30lb green for years with no issues and also whiplash crystal in 25 and 30lb on spod and markers for years again with no issues.

Be interesting to know what braid and what b/s it is. The wind knots are more down to the user. Dontoverload the spool and closed the nail arm by hand not using the reel handle. Also wet the braid before use.

Yep I gave up using braid last year...
Gardner Pro dark in 12lb with esp tapered leader, no more crack offs, wind knots etc...
A lot less hassle for me now... 😊

I wouldn't be surprised if I was hitting the clip too hard, but then again reading Pizza's response it is not just me this has happened too. Going to go back over to mono for sure, and have had a few replies to this so can base my decision on that I think.

I switched to “20lb braid”. It was a premium brand can’t remember which one.
I use a 50lb leader.
After a few casts the braid broke at the leader knot when hitting the clip normally. Never experienced this before.
When I checked the braid it was actually breaking at 14lb so way overrated.
Went back to 30lb (I use Powerpro or Korda Marker) and no problem since.
Personally I don’t think 20lb rated braids are man enough for big spombs even with a leader. So if that’s what you’re using it could be the problem.

I dont think that ive ever had braid snap at the clip
50lb shockleader and korda spod braid for me and i cant think of the last time i lost a spomb, had a crack off or whatever and i regularly have to spomb at 130yds plus
Either your braid is naff, your line clip is naff or you're hitting the clip really hard and need to judge your cast differently

Cheers Nick. Yeah, I re-spool every reel for the new season every year, which is another reason for the question as I haven't needed to use the spod yet so can re-spool with what is suggested on here for the season ahead with it. As said, its rare I use it loads at range but don't want break offs to happen ever again ideally.

Wychwood Dispatch, I think it is. No issue with closer range spodding, both times for breakage have been at range (80yards+).

8lb Daiwa Sensor . . .nice and cheap - flies through the rings due to reduced diameter but always used with an ESP tapered shockleader or similar. . .forget braid on the spod/spomb . . .this set up just works and has stood the test of time for reliability and minimal crack offs.
Either way - always feather your cast before touchdown . . .

For me it is 'last years' Gardner Pro mainline.
I change my mainline at least once every year, so I take the mainline off my spod reel and with one fishing reel I put the line onto my spod reel. The line that has been underneath and then becomes the front of the spod line, with the shockleader in front of that attached to the link swivel, then connect spod or Spomb
I have never snapped up with 15lb mono as my spod line.

I think its breaking off at the clip, so no shock leader will be present that far down the spool. The point of a shock leader is to take the burden of the cast, I believe.
Supoosedly the breaking off is down to judging your cast but I genuinely don't use them enough to say I'm good enough to do this but the odd water I do fish requires them as a tactic. Don't get me wrong, I'm not breaking off every time I go but it's happened at least twice now from memory, and I'm sure others aren't having these issues.

So, what are you chaps using?
Been using braid, but had a couple of snap offs then seen on another thread it could be likely from hitting the clip too hard (no stretch in braid), so thinking of changing over to mono.
