Perfect just spoke to them and yes they can get them for me, thanks for that. Next question do I have to change all of them or can I do a mixture of say 2 felt and 1 carbon to still have it faster than the standard drag but not as fast as they are now?

Looking at the Fox RX+ 3 rod set but haven't ruled out the Delkim Txi-d's either to be honest. Had the older Fox RX Digital blue set before and never had any problems with them.

Apologies just seen your referring to the small models. Yes Ryan at future reel servicing is a good shout. What size are they out of interest? Width and hole size also .maybe some daiwa ones would fit and their felt washers are only 35p each direct

Does anyone know where I can find the felt washers? Will swap a couple out for some of the carbon ones (not all of them) just enough to slow it down a bit, problem I’m having is I can’t find the 5500 ci4 ones I can find the 14000 ones just not the smaller ones anywhere

Had mine since January I can use them just would like to slow them down

Your get used too the quick drag you really do, the biggest downside of the powers for me is the crap clickers. Poor for a £300 reel.

I'd like to know this too but for the Power Aeros XTB as i've seen that the drag on this is only 1/4 turn which imho is a deal breaker. 1/2 turn or one full turn even better.

Unpopular opinion ! Is there a way of actually slowing the drag down on the ci4 xtc 5500s? I love the reels and the way they perform but I must admit I do think the quick drag is a bit to quick, would like to slow it down a bit.

They do a flash deal on a Friday . I had a few bits in my basket I was going to pay on the Saturday because I was waiting for payment on something I sold . When I went to cash out my eBay basket the stuff was back to normal price. I contacted them and they said they couldn't honour it so , emptied the basket and didn't buy it in the end .... 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ I won't bother again

If anyone's interested . There's an Austrian eBay shop offering 3 aero xtb's for £256 each plus £8 postage
7 day delivery .... almost what ci4's are going for . Id be tempted myself , but like others have ci4 xsc's. And there is very little between them . As all ready pointed out cosmetically they are maybe a touch aesthetically pleasing and a shade lighter.

The threadhas moved on since my last post ! I went to the tackle shop today and looked at both the cl4 and Aeros and can say there doesn’t seem much between them , the aero is slightly lighter and personally more aesthetically pleasing, but was impressed with both !

Before I go and sell my 5000ts I have considered getting the slow oscillation upgrades and couple of others (carbon washers etc) on them to improve line lay and in turn assist in increasing casting distances, was just wondering if any one has had this done and can vouch the modifications do have a noticeable benefit ?

Yeah I could do that at the risk of getting a divorce from the wife. Then there's the hassle of having to sell more stuff and trying to recover the original outlay. At the moment I've already got enough hassle of trying to sell 200 slot cars (don't ask 🤣 .

Besides, it's a personal choice and I don't want to get a load of cheap gear. In my experience when I first started carp fishing I bought cheap gear and most of it didn't last or wasn't fit for purpose. I was then lucky enough to replace it with decent gear (wasn't married with 3 kids back then 🤣 and the old saying is true, buy cheap, buy twice. I'd rather get quality gear like I had before (until some scumbag burgled my garage whilst I was on a night shift and took £11,000 worth of carp gear) as I don't intend to keep replacing stuff every couple of years just because the newest fashionable stuff is out.

Had the 19's and just could not get on with them, like I say I have had a stupid amount in last few years.
Shimano aero technium 12000xtc
Shimano aero technium mgs 12000xtb
Daiwa iso originals
Daiwa basia 19's
Shimano power aero's
Daiwa Basia 20's
If im honest my favourite out of them was the iso, felt strong, smooth and like it would last years.I only sold them as I wanted to try the basia's

Now is the best time of year to be out fishing, why not buy some second hand cheaper gear and get out there instead of having to save up until 2022? Buy the right stuff and you’ll move it on at pretty much the same price if you don’t break it.

At the end of the day most reels and rods do the same job, I’d rather fish with tatty kit than not at all.

They are stunning looking reels. Personally I love the red trim on them. I know a lot of people have said that they don't. Perhaps part of the reason I like the look of them also is ghe shorter body size (that's probably true with the Shimano reels too). I like the look of the 19 basia too, just wish it had a wooden handle though (I suppose I can custom that). But at nearer the £400 mark it's more my budget. If I hold on till the new year, maybe they'll come down a little in price.

Also the fact that you can get 300m of line on the spool is a bonus to me.

I switched to the Basia 20 scw qd,they are very nice indeed. They are not worth the money imo but then I don't think the mags are worth the extra over the power aero's.I have spent a small fortune on reels in the last few years, its like a second hobby

What did you opt for after selling them to your mate?

I do also like the look of the Basia's but get confused by the various models about. Are the DCR versions the same internally as the QDX but just with different cosmetic options? This is probably just me being picky and used to reels from 15 years ago having massive line capacity but the Basia's only having line capacity of 240m of 12lb line seems a bit low. I'd probably want to use 15 to 18lb line so going probably only get 200m on the spool. I'm hoping to start going to France again and it just doesn't seem enough if you're fishing baits out at 150m. Or am I worrying about nothing.

Thanks mate. Really appreciated. I'll get to a Tackle shop and have a look at some. At the moment I can get the Power Aero 'S FOR £290 each through my work discount. I may wait to see what Shimano bring out for 2022 though. Once I see them up close in a shop, I may actually like the current ones though aslong as they're not just plain black. (Silly I know, just not a fan of all the black stealth stuff out at the minute).

Prefer the look of the Ultegra's colour wise. One thing I've noticed with criticism of both the newer Daiwa and Shimano reels is the paint jobs apparently not as long lasting as their predecessors.

Yeah, had the daiwas , they’re good if you want a bait runner but if you run them side by side you’ll notice that the daiwas (like the 5000t) are really old tech and just not as smooth.
As I said I haven’t tried the basias so this probably isn’t the case with them but the other are like 20-30 year old tech and it shows.
Not that there is anything wrong with that and the daiwas are both tried and tested to destruction and totally reliable and look the part etc.
Just for me personally I wanted something with a little bit more refinement and the shimms are really well made, yes they’re not the most exciting to look at but they 100% do the job
Think at the end of the day if you have a doubt about buying anything it’s best to try before you buy if you can.

Agreed. That's a very sensible idea. Unfortunately being patient has never been my strongest point, especially when it's come to buying fishing gear. I've managed to raise a couple of grand so far from selling stuff (still got a fair bit of stuff to sell). Realistically the rods will take 12 to 14 weeks anyway but I just can't make my bloody mind up on the reels. 🤣🤣

Have you had infinity XBR's to make the comparison mate? Just trying to clarify things in my head before I make my decision.

I like the style of the Power Aero XTB 's but not keen on the colour. At the end of the day I'll be choosing on performance. I loved my Tournament S 5000T's, wasn't too keen on the look of the Infinity XBR's like the look of the Shimano Power Aero XTB 's but wish they were more grey.

Hi Guys,

Okay, so I’ve had the power Aeros for 4 years now, admittedly they didn’t get a lot of use last year and haven’t seen a ton of action this year either.

Having said that, they haven’t missed a beat when I have used them, one of the spool clicker does need fixing but that was my bad gettting a load on line behind the spool whilst trying to remove the spool so I could put it behind the bail arm when threading eyes(schoolboy error!!!)

Apart from that, no service and they are still as smooth as silk.

My mate still has his Ci4 and they have had a lot more action and his are still sweet too.

I have not tried basia’s personally but I can say the shimmy’s are as good/better than the daiwa infinity BR

I'm in a similar situation. Going to be ordering some custom built rods soon and previously had Daiwa Tournament S5000T's. I did consider getting Basia's but they are just a bit too much to spend for me. I was therefore going to either get another set of Tournies or Infiinitt XBR's.

I haven't had Shimano reels for carp fishing since my old Aero 6000 baitrunners 20 years ago (I have a Shimano match reel paired with my Acolyte float rod).

I do really like the look of the Shimano big pit reels but you hear so many negatives on both Basia's and Shimano reels, it becomes extremely difficult to choose. I can get the Power Aero 14000 reels for £300 with a work discount so wondering what people's thoughts are on them. Anyone using this particular reel?

I have the 14000 Ci4+ XTC. I actually sold my Daiwa 45 SCW's after two fecked up and all the grief I had getting them repaired (bearing failure on both) and after much deliberation, got the cheaper Shimanos. I've used them a lot and have been really impressed. Yes, very occasionally line can get behind the spool, but frankly it's user error causing that. They're light, feel very tight and the line lay is brilliant for distance work. The QD is just fine for me and has caused no issues when going from free spool to playing fish off the clutch. For the money, I think they're the best big pit you can buy at the moment. Only gripe I can think of is the bail arms could be thicker, so just take care if carrying them on a sling

Hi all

With time passed by since the last post ,has anyone got any more thoughts on the below as currently debating between them myself ? Is it worth the extra money and is there any negatives of the reels ?

Currently have Daiwa 5000ts love then but the line lay and retrieve isn’t exactly great .

Thanks

Hi Mate,

I have the Power aeros xtb , bought them before the new Ci4 came out.
My mate bought the Ci4 and there is( besides some cosmetics and bearings)very little difference.
If i was in the market again I'd probably opt for the Ci4
Both have the same extended spool skirt in comparison the the XTD.

Mine are coming up 2 years old and so far they ain't missed a beat.
The line can still get behind the spool if you overfill them but that's easily cured by stripping some line off.
Once you're used to the fact you don't need to fill to the top of the spool lip they're fine.

Extremely smooth as you'd expect and so far no odd noises , grinding etc , the power aeros are sealed so there is no need for oiling internally , send back to shimano for service i guess.
I haven't noticed that with the spool extended that you cannot get the bail arm over so I guessing that these don't suffer with this.

The drag is quite quick and at first I thought it was too quick but i'm used to it now and it hasn't cost me any fish(you'd have to catch some for that to be an issue, lucky for me i never do)
On the whole I'm pleased with them and won't be changing anytime soon

I have the same feelings towards modern reels. Currently have the ultegra 14000 xtc with the front baitrunner. I can put up with this although I'd prefer the quick drag. However, the thing that's doing my head in is the fact the bale arm wo t open/close when the spool is out too far. Surely this doesn't happen on the power aeros??

I have used Daiwa reels most of my life other than a few Shimanos 8000 gt etc. And I was adamant I was going to use Shimano reels for a change. I tried the mags and a few others and finally settled on some old Power Aeros and I love them.

I do not like bling, horrible

These new Power Aeros look good to me, aluminium body too, let me know how you go on

Shimano line lay is superb

All modern reels are just far to blingy for me. Build them with 20 years in mind, that’s my biggest tip

I have the Ultegra Ci4 XTC's. I too, didn't particularly like the fast drag when I first got them.

But after having them for quite a while now and caught some nice big fish using them. They have grown on me a lot.

I have gone back to my 90's style of using a combination of controlling the slow down of the spool by dabbing with my finger and using the QD.

Works for me and I like it.

I know the aeros have the new line guard which is supposed to prevent line going behind the spool. Do the ci4s have the same line guard

The XTD's had the line guard issue not the Ci4 XTC reels. The Ci4 & Power Aero use the same spools. Certainly not the price between the two reels worth the difference that is for sure. More than happy with my Ci4 XTC 14000 reels. The only way I would have the Power Aero's now is on a deal in one of my local shops where they are doing 3 x Shimano Power Aero 14000 reels & 3 x Greys Xcelerate 12' full cork rods for £1500 all in.

Yes, it's a predicament we are now left with.
The manufactures don't care - it's cheaper for them to make a quick drag only reel.
Probably go for the shimano baitrunner ci4 , that has both a quick (albeit the cap on the back baitrunner style) and normal drag.

I dont think that they are too quick at all tbh. Its down to personal preferences but im sure that some other brands have slower drags

Why would you want a drag that is soo quick, that you can't sensibly play a fish properly?
I own the older model Ultegra 5500 ci4 which has both the quick drag (baitrunner) , and normal sensitive drag (it's fantastic to play fish on with fine adjustment).
I love the quick drag - it's great when you're adjusting your indicators, packing the rods away etc. , but you can't sensibly play fish on quick drag in tight swims, PERIOD! (bangs head against wall) .
So damned would I buy any reel that only has a Quick Drag.

I used to have the Power Aeros and I could never see much of a diference between them and the Ultegra. The Power Aero is made from diecast aluminum, the Ultegra is made from CI4. The Power Areo has 8+1 ball bearings and Ultegra has 5+1. Power Aero has 1 speed line lay and the Ultegra has 2 speed. I think the Ultegra is slightly lighhter than the Areo.

You think? I think that the drag is one of the better features tbh, the drag cap is pap though!

Try a new iso if you think the shimanos are quick

Hi all. Considering either of these reels. My question is what do you get extra on the power aeros and is it worth the extra money. I know the aeros have the new line guard which is supposed to prevent line going behind the spool. Do the ci4s have the same line guard? Any advice, reviews would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
