I use a size 6 bank tackle longshank hook, little bit of shrink tube, micro rig swivel and a 16mm Manilla wafter. The whole thing settles slowly and the hook lays flat.

size 4 hooks should lay flat really...ive been using 18mm wafters and trimming to suit so lays flat.
using it to great effect at the minute myself.......

What hooks should be best used for the kd rig and wafters? Curve shanks may be recommended but got a reasonable batch of kranks - also good for kd?

I was a user of the slip d rig, but recently moved over to the German rig with a wafter.
Hook sits flat every time, just add a line sinker about 10/15mm from hook. This aids in the mechanics.
Every time bollie is lifted the hook spins around and nails them bottom lip right in the middle.

If your hook is in the air and not in the water, you might be missing the weight...  
If the bottom your fishing on is relatively clean, then a stiff hooklink and stripped D-section plus a decent hook size or putty should do it. If it's not clean then I'd use a supple hooklink and a big hook or pin a bit of lead into the bottom of the hookbait to keep it down

Used this rig for the 1st time this weekend and used an 18mm wafter and a size 8 hook using a stiff coated braid with just the D stripped back and it balance perfectly. I used a Korda kicker which would have added a little weight but doubt it had major impact other than hooking potential. Hook was lying flat and wafter just above it. Also worked this way whilst using a snowman hook bait. Oh and I caught so happy with the mechanics of the rig as well

looking on trying out the slip d rig with a wafter but i want the hook to stay flat on the bottom not in the air havent tested yet but whats the best way to cover this
