my first boilie mix was 8oz of semolina (supermarket) and 8oz of red factor bird food (haiths), it will roll ok on a rolling table, add your chosen flavour/sweetener to the eggs before adding the base mix, it will benefit from a bulk food oil too, olive oil or soya oil from the supermarket were the two i used, a 50/50 boilie base mix is as simple as it gets

if your new to it all id recommend checking out thecarpcatcher blogs on bait rolling with recipes
ive used one of the fishmeal ones this year and had some pleasing results.

added some garlic and fenugreek powder and soak them then freezing they appear to work for me and it doesnt cost the earth.
also i would imagine gives you scope to add bits and pieces later on should you wish.

A very good mix from scratch that I've posted on here before (and had positive feedback of via PM's) is:

40% LT94 fishmeal
20% CLO birdfood
20% Lamlac milk powder
20% semo

All of the above is available from British Aqua Feeds. What you add to it is up to you but some spices, hydro and if it takes your fancy flavours then go for it. I guarantee you it will work if applied properly. Its quite a soft bait (I never boil free bait much anyway) so some hard hookers with the same basemix sieved with added egg albumin (Dr Oetker egg white powder in small sachets from the supermarket will work) or whey gel (which is actually a powder) could be a good idea.

Failing the above a bag of Patshull Park mix from Quality Baits is what I'd suggest to get going

If you've got access to a little blender/grain mill then a classic supermarket bait is ground up cat biscuits with semo to bind, add a bit of fish sauce and away you go.. Super cheap and effective.

Remember making a base mix from 50/50 ground up trout pellets and dog mixers in the 90s, caught fish too. Used one of them old fashioned meat mincers with the turney handle that I got off a car boot.

Jonah, you need to be careful you cannot just throw anything into a mix. That is why Ian and others, including me, have suggested buying a ready made mix first...it gives you a baseline to compare your own mixes with. A ready made mix will bind and form a paste, will roll easily and when mixed with eggs and boiled will form firm boilies.

The mix I gave you will as well, it is thought out, not plucked out the air...plan what you are going to do or you are going to get disenchanted very quickly.

If your going fishing tomorrow buy a tin of luncheon meat and cut it into cubes, it will be far more effective than anything you put together just because the ingredients are to hand.

Good luck, with fishing and bait making, it's great to see younger anglers take an interest in bait and not just buy a bag of ready made boiled.

Hey!

I have been searching for things around the house that I could use in some experiments, do you think sunflower seeds ground up in a pestle and mortar would work as a base mix (with semolina). Would I need to soak them first? All the articles about fishing with seeds and such say i should soak them overnight but none have explained why yet

Thanks in advance

Yeah I agree, but making a mix from scratch, if it goes wrong you don't really know if it's the mix itself or what you are doing. Hence a pre made mix takes that doubt about ingredients out and you can get your mixing and rolling technique right before trying to go the whole hog

Thankyou very much guys!

I'm planning to go with Christian's recipe but I will also look into ready made bait mixes.

Im gonna also experiment with heating things like bird suet balls and dog food and letting them cool on the hook.

This thread has been very helpful and I appreciate all of you posting

Going fishing tomorrow, wish me luck!

Loads of different mixes you can do cheap and be relatively good

Semolina soya 50/50
Semolina soya ground up trout pellet
Semolina powdered milk and chocolate powder.
Then you could add herbs and spices
Little drops of essential oil

Just enjoy yourself but be prepared for a lot of fishless hours

Whilst i sort of agree with what you’re saying, there’s something about making a bait from scratch that adds to the excitement - especially when you are young! I was 13 when i started to make bait for myself (nearly 40 years ago) & i still remember the fun i had in making various baits out of whatever i could find in supermarkets. Most bait makers out there probably would have started this way.

There are loads of things in supermarkets that can make or contribute to good baits. The bait posted just below this one is a great - you can also try adding powdered milk-shake flavours, angel delight, powdered soups, various pet food (ground up - borrow your mum’s blender to do this), tetramin (fish food), fresh liquidised fish (mum/dad’s blender again!) etc.

Semolina & soya are easily available and will be your friend. They bind well and you can use these as a base to add any of the above (don’t go mad with the powders) Cod liver oil & sesame seed oil can be added in low levels to your eggs - 15ml of each to 6 eggs is plenty. So many ingredients to try. But maybe start start with the mix below and add a little bit of something extra to put your mark on it. Good luck, great to see a younger angler taking an interest in bait and wanting to make his

Getting a ready made mix is very good advice when you are starting out, all the work in formulating a mix that rolls easy and stays together has been done for you. You can learn about individual ingredients as you progress.

But if you really want to start straight away I would suggest the following can be purchased from a supermarket:
One part semolina
One part maize meal
One part ground rice
One part milk powder
One part soya flour, you might have to go to Holland and Barrett for that

6 eggs, 60ml of fish sauce, 20ml of olive oil and away you go. A couple of teaspoons of a spice (garlic, paprika, etc) will make it more effective as will a spoonful of marmite.

Hopefully that's simple enough, you will certainly catch carp with it.

Agreed, going down the readymade basemix route would also be my advice initially. Quality Baits are also reasonably priced so it isnt going to cost and arm and a leg to experiment and learn the basics

It's not actually a complicated mix mate, yeah there are some that have far less ingredients though. If your dad knows about bait can be not help you out with a basic recipe? Tbh you'd be better off buying a pre made basemix from someone like quality baits to get the hang of rolling your own before you start from scratch like that
