yep - exactly that.

Case in point, Steve Vai (technically incredible guitarist) joined Whitesnake (British blues influenced rock) for an album back in the early 90's.

Simply didn't fit. The songs were great and the individuals involved all did their job, but it just didn't feel right. Better looking girlfriend in the later version mind....

Any excuse to play a bit of Coverdale....

Yes for instance you can get guitarists who can play a million miles an hour, it can be very impressive but only for a short while.
Then you can get someone who plays a single note in the right place and you are awe struck.
Same for other instruments

Depends on your definition of better. In music it's not always the technically proficient, sometimes it's a 'something' that is felt and difficult to put into words.

Steve Jordan is class

Played with Keith Richards loads - as well as a whole lot of legends from Stevie Wonder to Springsteen to Little Richard, James Brown, Alicia Keys, John Mayer....

Dare I say, a better drummer than Charlie, even if not the original.

Sad news indeed. But I would have liked to see the stones in the early seventies when I think they were at their best not now. Every band has their day and I'd rather listen to that than a washed out version just hanging on for a few more glory days. Let's face it they ain't doing it for the money.

They are still continuing. The Stones start a new tour soon and Charlie had already announced he wasn't doing it, someone called Steve Jordan had already been called to stand in for him
