Definitely, always been that way imo, its who you know/having a friend recommend you that gets you the ticket.
I've been offered a place on 2 different syndicates this year, both with long waiting lists, simply because I know the guys running them, and they know I'm not going to be the one causing problems.
Ring them and sound v keen! Don't just wait on an email or text message is my advice.

Living right around the corner may be suitable for the person/s who run a water, but there’s a strong argument to say it’s not so suitable for the wider membership. No-one has the right to a syndicate ticket; bottom line is those who run the water decide what happens, although in the best examples a benevolent dictatorship is often the case.

Like most things in life you can’t expect things to fall into place and you will get back the effort and planning you put it in. I was on an idyllic private water with 4 members and lovely big fish for years. Nobody was coming in or out but I got my place through old friendships. Then the landowner sold up and that was that. I always had my fingers in a few pies just in case, despite no plans to move as you never know. When time was up I was able to take a place I had deferred and had a great year, now another ticket I’ve had a long time in the pipe has come up and I’ll have a go there this season.

A bit of human contact goes a long way. If you’re serious about fishing and want a good environment to do it you have to keep on top of it and keep your eye in. An email for a list or a post on a forum won’t get you those golden tickets.

A lot of places are who you no though, like the recent Korda video called “fishing the most famous lake in Essex” rob managed to get a ticket very quickly according to himself, a lot of people have complained about this because they have been waiting years for a ticket. One of the lads even living right around the corner, not got a bad word to say against the system just stating the fact that some people jump the que in front of you

We used to have a two list system.
The first list was the applications list, much like a standard waiting list.
The second list was people who had been contacted and several pictures and a carpy cv sent, then interviewed and were considered suitable for selection as and when a place became available.
The lads on the second list would occasionally be invited for a walk around the keep them keen, and maybe invited to the odd work party to get a better idea of their manners and interaction with members.

Spot on Darth. My own experiences over many years are of the list that you never come off. Most of the waters I've been on have been via other members recomedations or via relationship with the lake owner.

They are all run differently... Some will claim to have a list and say your name is on it, but there isn’t one, just to keep folk at bay... Others have a list but recommendation by existing members bypasses it, especially if they vouch for the newbie with their own ticket... Others a straight list and when your number is up then you’re in... I’ve known someone to drop a hand written letter in each year for almost a decade before getting on... Common sense, reputation, manners, courtesy and most of all contacts win the day...

Of course certain lists never go down! That's when the other list is being used. Writing to inquire is a better way rather than phone calls I've always found.

very useful answer

I'm reminded of the old working men's clubs in the past. There's a pub in Barrow affectionately know as the 'Kill-one' as in - you'll have to kill one of the current members to get in...

Maybe syndicates should start operating a footy style relegation system - anyone who blanks regularly gets relegated at the end of the season... that'd be fun! (I'm not serious of course)

A view from the other side of the table, if I may ...

As soon as a waiting list starts getting a fair few names on it, (say, over 25) its always going to be difficult for bailiffs/administrators/owners to answer a question like this. Combine this with a small total membership number, and those on the list will just have to be prepared to hang on in there if they really want to get a chance at fishing that particular venue.

Waiting times will invariably increase if the fish stock/fishing on offer is special, good value, or unique in some way, and the waitlist increases accordingly. Over the years I have had my name down on a number of fishery and Club waiting lists, and the response was often "Dead Man's Shoes, mate, so don't hold your breath".

I haven't got a crystal ball in my office, and I do receive a number of enquiries like this throughout the year, all of which I wish I could better answer with a real and honest degree of accuracy. Trouble is, there's no way I can foresee who will or will not renew their ticket when the time comes around !

No harm in asking the question, though, but please don't be surprised or disheartened if the response is somewhat vague.

Thanks.

Sometimes there is a list that never goes down though. I've only ever been on a handful of waiting lists, the syndicate I am very fortunate to be on now I didn't have to wait long as he released 3 winter tickets to raise money for some work to be done, very few drop off and there is in theory a list that will take c.5 years if you join it but also a list of people who have enquired but unlikely to get on for a variety of reasons. I'm on another list and have been for 5 years and get an update annually as to where I am. Before they started sending that email out I did use to chase for an update each year which they were fine with. I'm now in single digits and may get offered a ticket this year or next. So definitely worth a call and a chat to get the lay of the land, just be sure to be polite in enquiring rather than coming across as pushy

Sounds like you don't know much about the members or protocol of the syndicate you're hoping to join. Plan your angling with the tickets you're sure of is my advice.
#7 there's always a list

I'm in a similar boat. Trying to get on a lake. Wrote to the chap and ask him usually once a year. But he never tells me I'm number x on the list, I'm not even sure if there is a list.
