In reply to Post #17 That’s really useful to know, as I’m also rolling 15-16mm and the last test batch I did at only one min definitely came out too soft. So that confirms it’s the additions that are softening it up as I suspected. I will throw in a bit of whey to compensate. Cheers for coming back to me.

In reply to Post #16 nah mate im making 16mm baits but i air dry them for a while so they harden up. i do mine for like 3-5 days

In reply to Post #15 Are you rolling quite small pop ups? Cos I’ve never managed to get the baits to harden off enough when only boiling for a minute, but to be fair I am adding other soluble powdered ingredients. I think BAF suggest longer boiling times for that mix.

In reply to Post #14 Had another go today with baf mix and got it spot on. what i did was mix it up and leave in the fridge for an hour. i then rolled it out and got the water to a boil. i then turned it down so there were just one or two bubbles coming to the surface. after that added 20 baits instead of the whole lot. left in for 1 minute or untill they started to misshape a bit. Was around the one minute mark when they were just starting to mis shape. took them out and now air drying and they are exactly spot on just how they came off the rolling table. hope that helps some of you who may also be having problems

In reply to Post #12 Christian gave me a good tip. Add around 5g of Corkdust (0.5-1.1mm I used ) per 100g of pop up mix this way they roll even better and don’t mishape even with sensitive mixes.

In reply to Post #12 I doubt it to be honest. I went to the trouble of buying a digital thermometer and making batches with exact water temperatures. Never made a jot of difference. I think it’s the mix. I’ve had batches just like you, they are rolled perfectly off of the table, smooth and round. Then I set them, I won’t say boil as I was putting them in water under boiling temp, and they still on occasions misshaped.
Thing is it’s a decent mix for buoyancy and takes all the additional ingredients well. So I’m more than happy to use it.

In reply to Post #11 will try putting the mix in the fridge like suggested. havent tried that one yet. might be that the water is too hot or something im not sure

In reply to Post #9 I had an absolute nightmare with the Shilham mixes too, did everything by the book and they all warped and came out oval etc. Despite its critics Polaris is one of the best I’ve used

In reply to Post #7 Make the paste as normal and leave it in the fridge overnight. Then use a nozzle a couple of mm smaller than the table you’re using to roll the baits

In reply to Post #7 I’ve had the BAF mix do this to me on occasions and I’ve never really got to the bottom of it. I’ve given up worrying now. I am thinking of giving the cc Moore’s a go to see if there’s any difference as I really rate their hard hookbait mixes.
I think Ian has said in the past that he likes the shillam mixes, but a friend of mine had nightmares with it. So I guess it’s a personal thing.

In reply to Post #6 Lads, any idea how i can get my pop ups a bit rounder. they come out perfectly off the rolling table and then i stop the water boiling and put them in straight afterwards for 1 minute. they tend to come out looking a bit like the moon with small craters in them. am i doing anything wrong. im using baf mix and making the mix as stiff as possible to the point i can hardly squash it. they roll fine its just the boiling stage it tends to go wrong or something.

In reply to Post #3 I will be doing it Saturday so that’s good. Just so I know though you’re saying if I needed it to be a bit longer say hypothetically couldnt roll it until next Thursday I can throw it in freezer and it’ll be fine once thawed back out?
