Having just finished it I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the earlier chapters on the Big S. Only thing I would say is if you have seen the YouTube clips then the last two chapters are an anticlimax. Only thing that spoilt it really.

In reply to Post #484 Haven’t read Pennings book yet, but just finished Terry’s latest. I decided to read it a chapter at a time, to allow each water to seep in, as it were.
I really liked it, particularly the way he described his approach to each challenge. Always a sucker for a good story on waters that have not been done to death in other writings, and found the chapters that he had already done for ESP gave something extra.
Slippery Seal was my personal favorite, lovely cunning old fish!

In reply to Post #497 Have to say , glad I got it , reading it in stages not in order . The esp videos have eaten into the desire to read some chapters , not because I know the story rather that Tel telling it makes it better .
I skipped strait to big S , somewhere I should have fished , but smoking mirrors about who was a bailiff etc see me chucked off . The main reason I was looking at it was that I stocked a few really nice looking fish into it many years before Tel fished it .

In reply to Post #493 I finished 'through the mist' last night,
my wife who stayed up until 03.30 on the launch night to get it for me asked "well was it worth all the hype and effort ?"
I of course replied " yeh great" ,
not really though, found it fairly hard going, and unlike his first two easy to put down. As others have said, his videos which I love, meant I knew most of the stories already.
However just started Adam Pennings book and that seems very good so far 👌

In reply to Post #493 I'd suggest Oz Holness book then.
It's definitely the most inspiring carp fishing books I have ever read - the way he describes his mindset, approach and determination to his fishing lead to me making a few changes and having one of my best years angling ever.

In reply to Post #492 I finally got around to reading a copy, thanks to a mate
My thoughts are that if I had not seen the videos and read the articles then this would be up there with his other two. Unfortunately I already knew the stories, or at least most of them.
Good point earlier about this and Dave Lane’s last book. I never even finished Dave’s last book, found it incredibly dull. I think the grit and subsidence of their earlier books and lifestyles made for more interesting reading.
Maybe it’s me but I haven’t really enjoyed a carp book for ten years or so.

In reply to Post #490 Got to agree with you on the pictures being dark but my copy hasnt got the print problems , it has got smudges of blue ink on some of the pages though. Its well written ( unlike my posts 😂😂 but i think the markets been flooded with these type of books now and they're all pretty much the same. Getting a bit boring, i got to the burghfield chapter and couldnt be bothered to read it so stuck it back on the book shelf with the other 40 or so books...

In reply to Post #484 It is warm/cold for me as well but as others said knowing about captures before hand seeing them on web, his Christmas videos etc does spoil a lot but I guess that is the nature of the beast now days. In reply to Post #481 Finally got mine on New Years Eve, but then I do live a bit further away than most.
I ordered 3 books - 2 from Calm Productions; Through the Mist & Rolling in the Deep - and also Subsurface IV
The postage to Australia for the 2 from Calm doubled the cost of each book (36 quid each!!!), whereas the Subsurface postage was slightly cheaper at 20 quid.
As has been mentioned many times already, the 2 books from Calm each came in a jiffy bag and arrived damaged, whereas the Subsurface book was well packed in cardboard and arrived completely in tact.
Content-wise, I'm more impressed with Adam Penning's book than Terry's. I think its because the videos have already spoilt a number of the stories so there is no mystery in them. although there are a few interesting bits. Adams is much more of a life story and that appeals more.
Subsurface IV is a different beast altogether, and I'm well impressed, despite what others have said about the lack of words. A quick flick through the pages makes me want to get back out on the bank of my syndicate, but I fear that is more than a year off now. Think I'll be getting a few more books before wetting a line ...

In reply to Post #477 Ditto. A few chapters in and thought I would find putting it down at night hard based on some comments but so far not found anything overly inspiring. Not bad, but equally nothing special, so far. Kind of looking forward to finishing this and starting Oz's book which I got for Xmas. Also really want to get Micky Grays books as they sound great, with Micky being named dropped quite a lot by Tel in this book

What are peoples thoughts on this book?
For me I can't even finish it and I am a huge fan of his writing. I'm at the Burghfield chapter and I feel I can't go on.
It seems that Peter Pan has grown up - his previous books were about the sense of adventure, on from one challenge to the next - the stories of how things fitted into each other - the mystery and the unexpected (usually a quick capture).
with this book being based on the lakes he fished, it's more about bounty hunting and missions for each fish - he comes across as cold and dull imo - it's what he did for work to complete projects and not about the escapism - similar to Nigel Sharp's book.
Maybe we have had a few books since his last one which have upped the game a little when it comes to mindsets and enjoyment (Micky Gray, Carp Life 2 and Oz Holness etc) - After putting the book down last night I went to catch up on Dave Lanes Patreon stuff where he covers his journey and the laughs along the way and I feel they are worlds apart.

In reply to Post #451 Went strait to the bid S chapter , somewhere I got chucked off once , but had I known the score would have chanced my arm again . The reason ? , because I put some fish in there , scaley lovely young fish from the lake at the back. It was due to be filled in , and I had permission to fish it , I caught half a dozen fish and it seemed silly to put them back , so in the big S they went . A non starter these days , but over 30 years ago things were slightly different

In reply to Post #424 My subsurface 4 showed up same day too. Work of art. But Terry's books have never been about that (for me anyway). The printing in his first book was shocking and some of the photo reproductions in the second leave a lot to be desired. In fact I chuckled at the print in this new one as it took me back to the first. It doesnt matter. It's all about the read, and all three of Terry's are in my top 5 I reckon.

In reply to Post #424 Received two one signed and one not (not to resell btw). The signed one came a few days late by Royal Mail and the non-signed one came via APC. Both of them where put through the letterbox which is not ideal as its a large drop, but luckily the both books are still mint.
The whole experience was shocking. I know people who have received two signed books when ordered them together, people who ordered them before people who received signed copies yet there's weren't. Deffo a company to avoid
Also forgot to the mention the none signed ones also have a lot of faded words on the ink. Seems their quality control is bad

I have a friend who is a carp book collector. I was working in his house this weekend when he happened to have just received Terry’s book and Subsurface 4. I have to say from a purely design and feel point of view, Terry’s was very underwhelming. I don’t think Calm Productions have really done him justice at all. It’s got a cramped feel to it, the whole thing looks shoe horned in. The layout is far too boxy. Simple half page photo, top or bottom of the page with text crammed in above/ underneath. Very disappointing. Doesn’t have a feel of a designed book, more an exercise of just fitting it all in. If it had the layout and feel of the latest subsurface or the bcsg books it would be amazing. As it is, although I’m sure it’s a brilliant read, it looks and feels like just another carp book. Shame as it could have been spectacular. A missed opportunity to do something very special.

In reply to Post #419 Mine turned up after only a week or so and in mint condition which seems like a rarity having flicked through here. Have also noticed the dodgy print on the left hand page. Nothing that I’m worried about, but I’d be a bit pissed if I was Terry.
Content so far has been great, strong first chapters. Got to agree with what someone else said that I’m not overly excited to read a lot of the chapters as they’ve been largely covered on some form of media before. Wasing, Burghfield, Tunnels & Little Grey for example.

Ordered some kids book few days a go and it came properly packed and corners protected. p.s Did anyone maybe see Mike Willmotts Carp life (first one) for sale somewhere? how much do they go for if anyone knows?

The way this whole thing has been handled from the start I honestly believe Calm Productions are just winging it and sending orders out in no particular order

In reply to Post #316 I know there’s a few Tel enthusiasts that like to try and follow the same path of lakes and fish - they might struggle emulating the majority of these now
From a writers perspective, waiting a decade or more, before you publish your long awaited book, would stop the sheep following in his footsteps as all those known big target fish are dead, so no point clogging up those potential waters, club tickets.
Keeping sponsors happy and previous water members as well.

In reply to Post #360 Received mine a few days ago and I went straight to the ‘Tunnels’ chapter as it’s a lake I fished and loved. I wondered if there would be anything we didn’t see in the film, but aside from the odd tale regarding the horses (which I experienced myself so it wasn’t totally out the blue!) it was basically the film in text. Literally word for word in some of it.
Typical Tel tale but it did feel a bit rushed, but maybe that’s because he was writing about something people had already watched.
Other than that all I’ve read is the intro, which was nicely written.

Ordered on the 2nd, it turned up yesterday... usual story no tracking info, a dozen confirmation emails, no reply to messages or emails, no answering the phone but it did at least arrive. Very very minor damage to one corner but at least I can read it.
Mr Lane has gone quiet about the release of his book over the last couple of weeks, I hope we don't have a repeat performance!

In reply to Post #357 Will people go to the time, trouble, and cost to return a minor damaged 1st edition for a second print edition. The latter may also turn up with similar issues.
Distance selling regulations exist but I bet millions of items at comparatively small cost are simply kept by unsatisfied customers. Sad but true, and I bet most of us have been guilty of it.

In reply to Post #356 They have said a re print will be done at the end of Jan. loads of people moaning about books arriving damaged. When they finally get their heads out of the sand and start answering people’s calls, emails, messages and posts I can see them having to refund a lot of people for missing books and damaged books that can’t be replaced as there are no more books left

In reply to Post #354 My conspiracy theory is the books were never tracked so many of the signed one could go missing.
If you've not received your book it's because it was a signed one. In a couple of weeks time you'll get an apology an unsigned one will be delivered promptly.
Only kidding I hope you all get them soon

This hasn’t got anything to do with Royal Mail delays. I’m 99% sure it’s down to Calm messing it all up which they have done from the very beginning
The 2 copies I ordered went to 2 different addresses with near identical post codes one ending DQ the other UQ and the houses are not that far apart. The book I ordered first I’m still waiting for and the book I ordered second was delivered on Wednesday morning after being posted on the Monday

In reply to Post #335 I left the UK in1996, when there was still a level of mystery. Having moved here (North Carolina), I remain almost overwhelmed about the level of unknown potential, mystery, in the (big) waters I have shortlisted for serious attention here. Realistic targets in this state are Mid Thirties, the holy grail is a 40.
I will love reading what Terry has been up to when the book arrives.......

In reply to Post #335 I think the fact you think that all of that is true proves my point. There is a whole world of angling outside the internet, social media and print.

|
#335 12 Dec 2020 at 7.39pm

In reply to Post #326 I'd say the reverse and you're out of touch or missing the point.
The new fish? Yep there are plenty around and doing big weights they come with all their stocking details and the pictures of both sides with dates, no mystery, nothing unknown. Totally manufactured and very plastic in my view compared to the past.
There aren't even any unknown waters anymore with the advent of Google Earth etc. I'm sure there are a few whoppers out there in some of the big reservoirs and I bet there are a few trying for them, that's exciting.
Stuff like the Burghfield Common is boring, in some respects the stuff that Lane and Hearn write about is boring, known waters and known fish, the thing that would really spike peoples interest is that unknown uncaught whopper from some windswept inland sea, the type of catch that's lost on todays pop up angler because if it aint on Faceache it doesn't exist.

|
#330 12 Dec 2020 at 4.42pm
|
In reply to Post #324 What interesting stuff has he left out then?
There won't be stacks of unknown fish / venues because 1. They don't really exist anymore or not to the extent of filling a book about them and 2. he has sponsers to keep happy so most of his captures are published by ESP one way or another

In reply to Post #327 New is a relative point with age. The fish that were ‘new’ when Bazil was ‘old’ twenty years ago are the same age now. Many are just off the circuit of YouTube and book whoring.
And Two Tone was a wrongun
|
|
|
#327 12 Dec 2020 at 12.19pm
|
In reply to Post #326 That’s the point - it used to be about the “mystery” of either relatively unknown “history” fish and/or hard venues, whereas now most of the fish are younger known fish, albeit from a decent looking fast growing strain.
Just think how old Bazil, Mary, Heather, the Park Lake fish, two tone, etc were compared to some of the newer fish

In reply to Post #325 If you think it’s still the same big fish in the same ponds you’re out of touch. Most of said bigguns are goners now but there are plenty of new good strain fish out there.

#325 11 Dec 2020 at 9.46pm

In reply to Post #324 That's because the whole game is stale, nothing ground breaking for a while now, not even sure if there's anything left to break new ground, just the same fish but bigger in the same old ponds.

#324 11 Dec 2020 at 9.01pm

In reply to Post #311 I’m disappointed with what I have gathered so far as Terry seems to have played it very safe with the waters covered, indeed he has already covered most of these captures in some form elsewhere. From what I gather he has left the interesting stuff out.
Yes, I will buy it though, cos it’s Terry.

Didn’t think it was a secret that it was the Ellis. Tels referred to it by name in videos before and I thought it was fairly common knowledge if you’re from vaguely round the area.
Both the big mirrors gone now, as is the ‘Ivy Pool’ mirror, lost that in the summer. And the Tunnels fish all died as well.
I know there’s a few Tel enthusiasts that like to try and follow the same path of lakes and fish - they might struggle emulating the majority of these now 😂

In reply to Post #311 I agree that print quality is not the best, which is a bit of a surprise given that hey knew how popular it would be.
In terms of content not read it yet, but covers Burghfield, Northwycke, Spitfire Pool, Ashmead, Wasing, the Thames plus a few others so a good variety of venues. I don't doubt for a second that it will be a good read

I thought the reproduction quality of the new book was pretty poor in places, some of the pictures are printed so dark and text is blurred on a few pages.
Having only read the Ivy pool chapter thus far, which was a good tale to be fair. Although, much of the book has been spoken about to a lesser extent in the past, more or less.
I'm putting mine on ebay tonight he he.

In reply to Post #304 What's wrong with a photocopy can't you get someone to do that for you?
I used to get books from the library and take them into work to photocopy.
Not been to a library for a while do they no longer keep fishing books?, they used to be able to transfer them from branch to branch.

Last few copies of Darrell's book to sell on ebay went for;
£169.99 (or best offer)
£128.00
£125.00
£44.00
£50.00
£86.00
£97.00
£102.00
Subsurface 1 recently sold for £88.00 & £56.00
Darrell's is one I really want to read but I can't bring myself to pay stupid money for it.... ....hopefully there will be another re-print at some point

In reply to Post #298 Was that an inked postmark that Royal Mail do when they receive the item or a Business postmark that the company prints from their own machine? Maybe Calm prepared the item ready for postage on the 7th but did not hand it to Royal Mail for a day or two?
Glad I can't be bothered to read fishing books anymore seems such a kerfuffle.

Do you guys genuinely know anyone that would be willing to pay over £100 for the book on eBay? Seems crazy to me and I do wonder whether a lot of the bidding is fake on there which then encourages people to pay over the odds.
I haven’t used eBay for ages but seem to remember you can cancel the sale completely after the auction ends and just give an excuse of ‘item being damaged’ - I’m thinking if they get a mate to bid initially and they don’t get get any genuine bids after that point.
It just seems unbelievable to me...

In reply to Post #290 There is no tracking on the book. It’s just chucked in a Jiffy bag and sent in the post with Royal Mail. Seen loads of people complaining about bashed up books. I’m waiting for another copy to be delivered that was ordered before the one I received 🤷🏻♂️. Ordered one for me first and one for someone else (delivered to their address) they got their copy but I’ve not got mine yet, but they were nice enough to let me have their copy just incase the other one doesn’t make an appearance

In reply to Post #286 Way of the world these days I’m afraid. You snooze you lose and people will always be there to make money.
Look at most things new out like kids toys (LOL Dolls etc) new games consoles, books etc there is never enough to cover demand and companies probably manufacture on the cautious side so not to be left with stock which in turn cause a bit of a frenzy and people see an opportunity to grab as much as they can knowing they can make a few quid. Then once the initial frenzy dies down and stocks are replenished everyone can get what they want (unless it’s a limited edition obviously)
Mental that people are happy to pay 2-3+ times the price for this book when there is going to be more available in a few weeks or so 🤷🏻♂️

In reply to Post #285 The scalping on eBay I don’t agree on at all, more fool the idiots that buy them at over inflated prices creating a market for it.
Can’t personally see point in keeping one unread when there are people that wanted one that didn’t manage to get one.
Just my personal opinion though

In reply to Post #284 Could be any reason why people buy 2 copies
A gift for someone
Sell on eBay
Keep a pristine copy for the collection. Know a couple of people that buy 2 copies of a book, one to read and one to go into the collection and I don’t think this is to uncommon either 😂

In reply to Post #280 you have received 2 signed copies? So much for their "even if you buy multiple copies you will only receive one signed copy" policy. Just received 8 emails ( for 1 order ) that my 2 books have been shipped, no tracking information whatsoever and they have to make it to the Netherlands, hope they invested in some cardboard packaging for the international orders. Never had issues with them in the past, but this release has been handled very poorly.

In reply to Post #279 I did say not too unhappy as book will read the same. That said if I pay for any goods that arrive in poor condition I will be unhappy. The author in this case is completely irrelevant as I buy books to read, not for resale value but getting a brand new book in slightly damaged condition is a bit frustrating

A lot of fishing books have an initial run of 250-450 copies, very few have a print of 1000 +. Carp fishing demands a bigger print but writing books is no way to earn a living unless you are titivating bored housewives.
Amazon will publish your books and each copy sold is printed to order at big printer outfits. That way you get next to nothing for your work but your book is available and, should it become very desirable, a hard copy launch option can be taken up and you may claw back a few bob.
Let's face it, books are often just an ego trip and the money is a bonus.

In reply to Post #214 There are a number of ways that books can be published:
You can fund the production yourself, doing everything yourself - you then get to keep the full sale price, less tax. Very few take this option.
You can enter into the sorts of deals described, where a publisher fronts the cost of production, and the author gets a share of the purchase price, usually small ( 5% - 10% ? ).
There is also the method used by Chris Yates a few years ago to fund his book The Lost Diary. Chris advertised what the book was going to include, and people paid upfront the cost of a copy of the book. Once a certain number were pledged (which were enough to cover the cost of production) the book was printed and copies distributed.
Popular authors can also command an advance to cover the cost of any research required in the production of the book, which again gets recovered by the publisher from the purchase price. This tends to only occur with top selling authors who will be selling shed loads of books. Despite the popularity of angling, its still a niche market with generally small readership.
Thousands of Terrys' books will be sold, possibly tens of thousands, and i'm guessing that might earn him tens of thousands of pounds ?
Who knows ...

In reply to Post #215 I don’t remember all the details but Darrell Peck said that his deal was no money from the first x copies sold, then got paid an amount for the next quota, then a higher amount for the next quota..
It sounded like a smart way for the publisher to ensure that they cover costs for a poor seller and then splitting the profits of it is successful.
No idea if this is how most deals are done though. I assume that once someone has a couple of successful books they can drive a better deal.

In reply to Post #214 I think it was Micky gray who said he had to front a huge amount of money to get the books done. I wonder how it works too.

In reply to Post #209 Biggest book launch in years? Your deluded if you believe that, even last years best seller sold over a million copies but I'm sure Tel would be delighted with 10% of that.

In reply to Post #203 they posted on FB about it. something to do with phantom baskets and orders. Sounds more like people that have timed out the failing website and orders getting "stuck" at various points. They've closed the webshop so they can delete them all and opening again soon for orders.

If i go to the Calm website it still sits in my basket but the webshop is closed - any idea if this will remain there when it re-opens or if i'll be back in the "bun fight" with everyone else?

In reply to Post #195 Funny ain't it, I enjoyed the first one so much so that I read it in one sitting but the second took me a few weeks of picking it up and putting it down, the misses managed to order a copy for me of the latest one for a Christmas pressie, if it's not signed I'm not bothered so long as it turns up as she hasn't had a confirmation email at all but paypal has confirmed the payment for the order.

In reply to Post #190 I disagree. I found his second book a much more enjoyable read. Maybe that both Terry and his angling had matured somewhat but I related much more to him and his fishing at that point than in his 1st book
