Heli safes can discharge the lead if you use a lead without a swivel/ring, ie just the wire loop of the lead straight onto the Helisafe. It’s the reason korda brought out the range of helileads, a lead that has a ring on the loop but not a swivel. If you cut the swivel off of a std lead and connect it with the wire only the force of it hitting the bottom hard can discharge the lead, so you would feel it hit the deck when feeling down, if using slack lines, leadcore and very light bobbins then I guess you could “tighten up” and not realise, particularly if there was floating weed to tighten up the line.

I read somewhere that the earlier the Heli safe system had problems with the lead discharging on the cast. I spoke to someone at Korda and they said the problem was trying to be resolved. However perhaps it has not been ! suggest you contact Korda to answer the question.

The lead would come off on the cast if any of the below were true no?

I'd think if you got the drop then you've either been done (unlikely with no indication imo) or you've hooked something (e.g. weed) as you lifted the lead off the deck for the retrieve?

I've had that happen when the 2 parts weren't clicked in properly

Had you cut the swivel off of the lead so it only had the wire loop?

Perhaps a silly question, but was the spring in it ? ....Im ashamed to admit in the past Ive managed to put one together forgetting the spring in - thankfully there was no one on the opposite bank when the lead went flying.

If your fishing a silty lake you need to open the heli safe and clean them pretty regular cause the spring gets full of sediment and locks open.

Reeled in a spinner rig on a heli safe and had no lead on the end of it? There was definitely a lead when it hit the water as I felt the drop and no bleeps on alarm I don’t think a fish had caused it to drop off. Any ideas? Could it have been stuck on something so when I reeled in the lead fell off?
