I've got the feeling that is depending on the lakes. canals or rivers you fish.
For example: at one local canal I can't notice a difference but at another canal the catch rate at night improved dramatically by fishing bottom baits instead of pop-ups while during daylight, pop-ups out fish bottom baits.

I tend to use low pop ups, carp can't tell if they are bottom baits or pop ups anyhow.

Asking about the usefulness of hi-viz or plastic baits at night time is better debate, but I still find they all catch well.

You're overthinking it buddy. I use pop ups for 95% of my fishing and I've caught countless carp at night.

What are your thoughts on the effectiveness of a popup rig at night versus a wafter or bottom bait rig?

I haven't done a huge amount of night fishing due to various reasons and have fished way more day sessions. But I plan on doing a lot more night sessions in the future. However, this has got me thinking about my rigs and if they might need to change to improve my chances.

I mostly fish popups and have loads of confidence in them. I understand why they work so well in the day time, they stand out like a sore thumb and carp can see them from a fair distance and head straight for them. But what about at night?

Do carp feed differently in the night when they can't see what they're feeding on? If they're feeding more based on feel/smell and sucking up a load of silt, it would make sense to me that a rig on the bottom is more likely to get a bite.

Or maybe they CAN see popups at night(somehow) and so it makes no difference at all?

Would be interested to know people's thoughts and what they have had more success with.
