Hi Jon,

Yes, my daughter is a staff nurse at the Norfolk and Norwich Uni hospital and works in the fracture clinic.
Fortunately, Norfolk has,so far, been lightly affected by the virus and as of yesterday, the NNUH had 45 virus patients with a handful in CCU and have had ,10 deaths.
In conversations with her, she sees the doctors and staff in her dept as a contented group of dedicated professionals with high morale who live the job and have no major gripes re the NHS system.
However, as noj alluded to earlier, she has questioned the high costs the NHS seem to pay for sevices and equipment.
I'm not much clued up at all about the issues you raise re the running of the NHS over the last ten years of Tory government, but I do have a criticism of the policy of employing trained foreign nurses because it is cheaper than training our own, for the reasons that, those foreign nurses are needed in the countries they come from, and it seems, there are 1000s of young women who would train if given the opportunity.
Your post, obviously has an element of political bias to it, which is your privilege, but not something I want to engage in, other than to say, the thought of Corbyn and Abbott running anything would worry me. The last election was a vote of no confidence in them and until your party produces some credible politicians, you are fighting a losing battle.
Re the PPE and testing issue, I've already posted on that, but would add that, given these unprecedented circumstances, it's too easy to take a high stance and in hindsight, criticise what is a nightmare of complicated issues.

BB.

I see Eddie Large has died with it now, was being treated in hospital for heart failure and caught the bloody virus in the hospital which finished him off!!

I think you said somewhere earlier in this thread that your daughter is a nurse..
Do you not feel that she has been let down by ten years of Tory government and austerity, in terms of wages, hospital funding/cuts, cost of training, and now lack of PPE, testing and other issues which were highlighted a couple of years ago when the system was stress tested for just such a pandemic?

More than likely, so they can keep there app and stick it up there arris.......

Nice one Wayne, we can get through this if everyone does their bit, eh?

It's 'their'

Hi Croc,

It seems most of the testing done to date has been on patients showing symptoms, and if infected, the appropriate treatment being implemented, whether self isolation in mild cases or hospitalisation.
It also supplies the data for the numbers of infections, the daily rate etc. so stats experts can produce and adjust their forecast predictions.
There is a second test called the antibody test, which, apparently the government have just bought 3.5 million, and is undergoing trials and fine tuning, which test whether a person has had the virus and has built any immunity to it. This gives further data to the numbers and spread of the virus and an indication as to whether there is a build up of a herd immunity, which would influence any relaxing of the lockdown.
Re the criticism of the numbers being tested, it seems there are shortages of particular chemicals and kit, given the unprecedented current global demand and that countries like South Korea and Germany began stockpiling sooner. It seems the same applies to PPE and today, the US is said have almost run out of it.

It doesn't necessarily follow you get the virus at some point if your PPE is good enough. It is disastrous to allow health professionals to treat infected patients without testing that group regularly and routinely. Going down this herd immunity route for so long looks like a major mistake

I know that politicians and the media love a buzz word / phrase but whoever started the whole 'ramp up' thing needs a kick in the pants.

since when did the british public fail to understand the word 'increase' and need a handy replacement slogan...?

sorry - i know it's a small gripe in the grand scheme of things but had to get it out of my system

peace and love everyone

I guess it's primarily for those NHS staff who are having to isolate due to family members so they can at least get back to work.

you are right though - the test will only be valid up to the point it is taken

Surely the 'testing ' is only like an M.O.T Valid on the day it is done.

You have the test negative .. back to the frontline .. you get the virus at some point .

I don't see how one test proves or disproves anything in the long run.

Based on that . Only NHS staff need continual testing , as presumably people in hospital have been admitted with symptoms and therefore need treatment be it for Covid or the common flu.

How does that work Jon, does it track your mobile phone by GPS like the Chinese are doing? They then send you a txt if you've been in contact with a positive testing person.

It's not that sophisticated. Just a way to flag up to the authorities those who have symptoms that are not serious enough for doctor/hospital to be aware of, and where they are. Nobody's moving at the moment anyway.

With the appalling revelation that only 2,000 out of 500,000 NHS staff have been tested anything could be going on in the health and care system
