Hi noj,

I'm sorry, but it still makes no sense to me.
If they can accurately say that 140 deaths occurred in the last 24 hours, then that follows that they can accurately record the daily deaths for any day. I would assume that at a set time every day, the last 24 hour death numbers are gathered from each hospital. That would be very easy to do. Anyway, as you say, the remaining deaths were between the 1-7th of march. Then, why weren't those deaths recorded on the days they occurred?
On the graph of deaths, from march 14 to today April 9 is 26days and in that time frame is the almost 8000 deaths to date. Divide that by 26 days gives an average of about 300 deaths. But we know the deaths weren't averaged out and took a steep upward curve, so to say there were only 140 today doesn't make sense.
The chief medical officer today, made the point that the daily rates of deaths and new infections he showed on the graphs, gave them almost real time info to assess progress and would offer the chance to change any tactics with little time lag, so as to get maximum benefit from them.
He also made the point that the other deaths in nursing homes etc. we're not included because the method of recording them was too time lagged to give them fast assessment.

Edit. My brain hurts.

Hi Ocelot,

Nobody does anything for no reason, there's always a motive.
You know full well why I pointed that out, to show that it's pointless and being on an open forum, people might not want to make themselves look foolish.

just pulled this off the office for national statistics website

Deaths involving COVID-19
Our latest data on weekly deaths registrations include deaths involving COVID-19. In the three weeks up to 27 March, there were 647 deaths in England and Wales involving COVID-19 (397 men and 250 women).

The majority of deaths involving COVID-19 have been among people aged 65 years and over (568 out of 647), with 41% (233) of these occurring in the over-85 age group.

Our figures are based on deaths registered in the stated period and include all deaths where “COVID-19” was mentioned on death certificates. They differ from those published by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), which are based on deaths occurring to date among hospital patients who have tested positive for COVID-19.

DHSC figures are valuable because they are available quickly and give an indication of what is happening daily. Our numbers are slower to prepare because they have to be certified by a doctor, registered and processed. But once ready, they are the most comprehensive.

There were more deaths involving COVID-19 among males t

The bbc themselves said that 140 deaths occurred in the last 24 hours and the remainder between 1-7 March, therefore the graphs are not accurate in terms of a daily tally... overall they may well be, but it’s deaths announced in that 24 hours and not the actual number
You’re an intelligent man BB, can you not see people’s point?

Hi Mal,

I think you'll find the figures given and graphs shown in the daily 5pm update on BBC TV are accurate and are what they use to assess progress.

It’s the folks dying of all the ‘normal’ **** I feel sorry for, no one gives a **** about them, maybe when this is over we should keep a daily tally of people dying of everything and then everyone will be too scared to get out of bed let alone leave the house

My point is that the daily figures are not necessarily fatalities in the last 24 hours, but recieved data in that time period.

And that it would perhaps be useful if that was made clearer.

Overall figures are more useful right now I think...
