To be fair Mal when he said ‘you’ I don’t think it was directed at just you, more like ‘if someone’…Well that’s how I read it anyway.

Which they haven't, so clearly don't. So what's your rambling negative point this time?

Hi Ocelot,

I bet countries like Iran would willingly take the hit and let loose a virus like this, if they thought it might bring the Great Satan, the US to its knees.
Watch some Iran videos where an enormous crowd chant " death to America."

BB.

Hi BB

I never said I only read the guardian...

I read lots. From different angles and opinions.

I recommended that article because it is a very good read. It's not overtly political and gives a good breakdown of the history and recent events concerning the WHO

Of course the left leaning press and politicians are going to oppose and find fault (it's not difficult) with Trump as he is so right wing. For every example of leftist 'attack dog' there is a right wing counterpart / tweet / policy etc. It's their job to provide balance.

His behaviour in the press conference earlier this week was embarrassing for a world leader. He was asked a valid question about his ineffective action during the time after closing down flights from China and responded with a typical (for him) childish attack on a journalist who was simply doing her job.

As to why we should fund the WHO when countries choose to ignore them, that's a good question, but I'd reframe it.

Why ignore the advice of a body that you fund to give you expert opinion?

Perhaps the answer is more funding then.... Only one of the 150 odd members/contributers kicking off blaming the WHO I see. Wonder why

Got to be something like that.Trashing economies around the world and 1000's of people dying because of a disease is ludicrous and shameful and shouldn't be allowed to happen again.

Hi Jon and Ocelot,

There is no viable alternative, given how many undemocratic, authoritarian regimes there are in the world.
If Iran said it was raining, you would look out and check for yourself.
It is being suggested that WHO failed it's remit when faced with a major issue because of Chinese intransigence. SoTrump is saying, what is the point or value of paying out all that money.

BB

Edit.
Hi Sir B,
Yes, I like that idea.
Why didn't I think of that?
It's definitely got legs..

Not had time to fully think this through but what comes immediately to mind is an organisation who are able demand access and if denied the rest of the world take immediate sanctions
As it stands they only have limited use

And if they had real power?

People would be bleating about being oppressed by the dastardly unelected WHO when they say sugar taxes are a good idea...

Hi Goose,

Funding to the WHO for their 2018/19 budget.

USA = over $400 million.

China = about $86 million.

Hi Mal,
As I pointed out on the other thread, if you only read the Guardian, you will only get a one sided view of US politics.some countries are quite happy for the US to fund the lions share of these organisations, but quick to criticize when they complain. Perhaps those countries should put their money where their mouth is.
It seems, China only let WHO into Wuhan when It suited them.
What's the point in funding a world organisation that has no teeth and is easily thwarted by a country that might choose to do so?

BB.

Exactly.

And when they give advice - and countries ignore it (hello USA and UK) - what can they do?

It's by no means a perfect organisation, but it definitely doesn't deserve to be the scapegoat for a bullying manchild politician....

There's a very good article on guardian.com called The WHO vs coronavirus. Well worth a read.

That's the problem the WHO need to be invited, to be effective they need to have greater powers.
