Just received my order of ting tongs and squid/plum very happy with them.. can't really smell the difference between the 2 but the ting tongs smell exactly the same as some I had years ago from a well known angler 😉

Just placed my first order with Ryan for some Ting Tong and Ultra Fruit 14mm airblls. Hopefully they'll be here soon although I can understand they're hand rolled and may take longer than usual. Looking forward to using them, going to be fishing them over Sticky Manilla, so see what happens

Ryan nailed the DT Bobbers and arrived very quickly considering he'd not heard of them before. These bad boys have caught me so many fish, I rarely use a different hook bait regardless of what the free offerings are

It's really good to hear that Ryan is turning things around for UB.
I don't need any yet, but will definitely order from him when I'm running low on the old Ting Tongs.

Was down to my last few DT Bobbers, so gave Ryan a shout, he wasn't aware of these so said he'd ask Matt for info. Matt got back to him quickly, and they're being made now 😁 so if you want some get in there quick. Great work Ryan 👍🏻

Hi mate, if you ever want anything slightly more washed out just let me know and I'll be happy to sort it for you.

With regards to flavors everything is exactly the same as when Matt was In control. Due to everything being rolled in such small batches slight differences are inevitable. I don't order ingredients in massive qaunities to keep everything as fresh as possible and I notice slight differences in certain things from time to time.

As a business i really want to be as approachable and friendly as possible. If anyone has any questions or problems, just give me a shout. I'll always try my best to be engaging, helpful and honest.

I came back just to say thank you for all the feedback. I have taken it on board and created a website with stock control so you can see what's in stock and available for almost imidiate dispatch.

Hope all our customers and forum users past and present stay safe during these testing time and thanks again.

Cheers!

Has anyone found the new ones to be a bit different. I'm sure they are still good but the colours seem to have been revved up a bit - I liked them a bit pale. Smell a bit different too but never had 2 batches the same from matt either

You will need
Flour sieve, egg albumin, eggs, basemix, flavours, corks, oil, mixing bowls and fork, small bowl of sunflower oil, a tray, boiling pot, drying tray, patience!

Basemix preparation
Get a flour sieve, and sieve your mix thoroughly, helping the mix through the sieve with your fingers. Chuck out what remains in the sieve (i.e. the big bits). Add egg albumin at 5% (so 50g per kilo) Ė with nut mixes it helps to also add whey at 2.5% (25g per kilo) as well as the albumin. You can go higher than 5% for a really hard bait, but you'll find they are more prone to cracking

Corkball preparation
Pour some corkballs into a container (empty ice cream tub is ideal, that sort of size). In a cup, crack one whole egg, then crack another egg but only put the yolk in the cup, discard the white (or save it for making the paste, see ďpasteĒ). You then have a whole egg plus a yolk in the cup. Whisk with a fork, really well. Tip SOME of this mix over your cork, and stir well. The right amount will leave all the baits well coated, without a great big puddle. Set this aside while you make your paste (this gives time for the egg to partially soak into the cork). Remember for 16mm baits you will need 12mm corks, for 14mm baits 10mm corks.

Paste preparation
THE MOST IMPORTANT BIT of the whole process so take your time and get it spot on. This volume of egg will give you about 150 Ė 250 baits depending on the mix and the level of liquid flavours included.
Break two eggs (whole) into a bowl. Add the white that you saved from the corkball prep, or crack another egg and carefully only add the white. You now have an egg mix that is naturally ďheavyĒ in albumin. You can go even further and use 50% whole egg and 50% white, this will give a really hard bait but they will be a little more prone to cracking.
Add your flavours to the egg. As a general rule
- To match your free baits, use normal levels plus a half (so if it is 1ml per egg, use 1.5ml)
- For extra strong hookbaits, use 3 to 5 times the recommended level (works well with fruitier flavours in particular)

Now add a LITTLE bit of oil (with the exception of B5 or a bait that is naturally oily, in which case use no oil at all). A teaspoon full (5ml) is plenty. For fishmeals use either salmon oil, or sunflower oil. For nut use sunflower, rapeseed, sesame. Mix well with a fork.

Add your basemix to the egg mix, slowly, until it is sloppy. Now leave it, for at least 10 minutes, to absorb. Go back to it, and continue adding mix until it is sticky, but you can form it into a ball. Wrap in clingfilm and leave for another 10 minutes. I canít stress enough that you must leave it to absorb, if you donít it will be absorbing liquids while you are working with it and drying too quickly. A good paste will be nice and soft, but not overly sticky, certainly a little softer than if you were rolling "standard" paste.

Go back to your corkballs, give them a stir. They will have darkened a bit and absorbed a bit of egg, if you need to add a bit more of the egg mix to them to really coat them, then do it.

Get yourself organised, you will need a lightly oiled try to put the rolled baits onto prior to boiling, a normal tea try is fine, just give it a wipe with a cloth with some sunflower oil on it, this will stop the baits sticking to it. Also get a small pot of sunflower oil, this will be used to lightly coat your finger tips and helps stop the paste from wanting to stick to you and not the corkball! Get your boiling pot on the go.

For a 16mm bait, you want to ďnipĒ a bit of paste off the ball of paste you have made, that is almost exactly the same size when rolled round as the 12mm corkball itself. The easiest way to do that, is to break a piece of paste off, roll it into a sausage thatís about 12mm in diameter, then chop it with a sharp knife into little pieces. Roll one of the pieces up Ė if itís the same size as the cork youíre laughing. Work in small batches, keeping the rest of the paste clingfilmed until needed. Take one of the pieces of paste, push your cork (soaked in egg) into it, then carefully pull the paste round it, trying to get a nice even coating of paste all the way round. If you find the paste is sticking to you as you are doing this, and pulling off the cork, start again with a new bit but oil your fingers lightly first.

You will find that the egg on the cork does two thingsÖfirstly and most importantly it allows you to slide the paste nicely over the cork without it leaving the cork and letting air in. Secondly it sticks the paste to the cork nicely. The hardest bit is the closure, i.e. when the paste is almost all the way round and you need to join it up to seal the whole lot. Be careful to squeeze any air that you have trapped out at this stage, ideally as you close up you will see the liquid egg off the corkball be pushed out of the gap, that is perfect if you can do it. Now you have 2 choices, either roll the corkball by hand, between your palms, until it is round then carefully put it on the tray for boiling, or roughly form it into a ball, and then finish it on a rolling table before boiling Ė that is better by far.

When you have enough baits, drop them into boiling water for 60 seconds, stirring constantly to keep them moving Ė if you donít do that they will not cook evenly at all. Donít be too disheartened if some of them distort a little when boiling, as long as they donít really ďblow upĒ youíll be fineÖ.if they do ďblow upĒ (you will notice a huge bulge appear in the paste) your technique is wrong and you have trapped some air between paste and cork when you are making them.

Sieve the lumps out of your mix.
Get a bit of beaten egg on the cork ball first.
Make sure there's no air between bait and cork

Iíve got ting tongs but never tried them before but they look and smell excellent but canít compare to matt. Iíve also had a couple customs rolls but itís the 1st time Iíve used them and they are exactly what I wanted and caught 6 fish on them straight away 😉 any questions Iíve had Ryanís answered straight away and been very helpful. If this continues I really canít see me going anywhere else

Fingers crossed UB baits are back on track. Always did well on the gtx and crab.

After moving over to specialized hookbaits I've never looked back but good luck to the new owner.

Hi,

I donít use forums etc, but heard through a friend this thread was running.... so thought Iíd pop in and reply

First off thanks for positive and constructive messages, I have taken it onboard. I understand from reading some people feel like they were wronged by UB Baits.... if thatís the case just drop me a message on Facebook or ring me and I will sort you out. I donít want to leave anyone with a bad taste in their mouth.

I was a user of Matts bait and had plenty of big fish on it. I dont think the quality of the bait was ever in question. Customer service, good communication, decent turn around times and good honest communication are my joint number one priorities. Everything is remaining the same bait wise. I will do whatever Matt used to do when he was in charge.

If anyone wants to get in touch with me please use my phone number or UB Baits Facebook page as I donít really log onto any forums.

Cheers
Ryan

I hope this works out ok for the fella taking it over
He might be better off doing what 'The Bait Room" does and closes the ordering section down when hes reached a certain level so they can meet the demand?
I used Matts baits and did ok on them and £14 for some hookbaits is not bad ... Ive neither got the time or the inclination to do them so Im happy to let others do it
The amount I spend on other crap and the amount of hookbaits I get through in 36 hrs is hardly and issue (the issue is all the other ***** I buy)

I guess your buisness transaction was with the previous owner and not with Ryan who appears to have bought the company brand so I wouldnt hold out much hope.

I looked at the catalouge posted on FB and noticed the range had 'shrunk' a little, the ones I bought and had the most success on werk the sticky krill cork balls that appear to have been dropped from the current range? I did start making my own cork ball pop ups using the sticky hook bait kit and additional egg albumin which proved to be very goodd so all is not lost!

Michael

Everyone who has spent any time observing unicorns knows they are only found on the plains at the bottom of the shangri la valley in the himalayas. Also it's only worthwhile harvesting the horns of the females at the height of the full moon. No wonder hookbaits are so expensive, and worth every penny.

Hope the new owner makes a success of the business but it seems a bit of a poisoned chalice to me.

To regain any sort of trust from your customer base after an almighty customer service feck up will take a hell of a long time. The guy will need to produce an outstanding product and service from the off. There's exceptional, proven hook baits out there for the same/less money, why would you pay £14.50 for the unknown.

Anyway, best of luck to the guy. Hope he makes it a success.

And that's where they're going wrong. They're rolling to order rather than building up a stock (far easier to produce a few kilos of a bait than to roll a pot or two on demand).

I've no issue with the price, it's the ridiculous claims made as if it's a skill passed down through generations using the finest grade essence of unicorn horn sourced from the far reaches of the world's highest mountains.

These companies try their hardest to make it look like its a difficult thing to do to justify the price. The vast majority on offer are on a very basic basemix & it's the colours/flavours that hook people. There aren't any magic ingredients these days. Fair enough if you're paying for the convenience, not everyone wants to make their own.

I can think of only two companies that are doing something different to the norm and have come up with something unique.

Yep and they ainít even full sized tubs!

I donít get why people donít make their own. With the ball makers available now itís a piece of piss and you can customise them to your exact needs. Make combinations of flavours and attractor packages and even vary the size of the cork balls used to create hookbaits tailored to different rigs.

I get that years ago you needed to source all the basemix ingredients etc but now days itís all off the shelf.

Having said that the baits I received from UB were very well rolled and consistent. I wasnít exactly blown away by the ting tongs but I did like the HydroK.

Good luck to the new owner. I hope he turns it into a really successful business. Maybe he could borrow/share a small bit of another companies stand at a few shows to build up the new companies profile a bit. Nothing like having a good sniff and squeeze in person, although since the court case those days are sadly behind me.

Was just going to say Ryan has taken over the reigns , he is a good guy, so do not worry about ordering gear, he is a top lad for a Watford supporter ..

Thank God, I've been at a loss with my corkies since Matt's withdawl from UB baits, really looking forward to ordering some more GB crabs!!!!! Best hookies in the business by a long way imo, good luck to Ryan in his new venture I hope he takes UB baits forward.

Matts UB baits were spot on, the bit that was the undoing of the business was having a great product to sell, and being too much in demand - and with only one man band Matt to deal with everything. Something had to give.
Unfortunately the lead times and communication went a bit Pete Tong towards the end.
Good luck to the new owner

Let's not forget that a previous user on here bullied & hassled Matt until his business went down the toilet.

If true......... word of warning to any potential customers ..
Read previous thread on ub baits and there serious communication(or non) issues, delivery time issues etc
Iíve used ub baits in the past without any problems ..
however after reading and hearing first hand off people that were told many a lie by Matt at ub baits Iíd steer well clear, I for one will never use ub baits again...
