In reply to Post #792 Yeah thats him , i was only 15 when i met him , he told me he was going to london to knock the **** out of some southern softie , but 3 days before he had a brawl with doormen in york i think , he did all 4 of them but he got cut above the eye so the fight in london was called off , that southern softie turned out to be lenny mclean !! There was a documentary made about him i think its on you tube , watch it if you get chance , i will have a look for it.

In reply to Post #788 I can remember him jeff, sure he fought a traveling fella and nearly killed him proper bad *******
As for benn he definitely got mixed up with the wrong people, got nicked for glassing a geezer called rolex ray, out of his nut on coke must have payed him off because it all seemed to go away
My mate had a row with paul ince and when he put it on him he went away and came back with benn who was off his rocker and started ranting and raving but luckily enough kept his hands down
Not sure why he’s fighting again, could be money could be he misses it but i dont think its a good idea

In reply to Post #790 That's the one mate, Gardner.
As reputations go, fearsome at the time when fists ruled the streets and not guns. I know he used to do debt collection and "other stuff", wouldn't have fancied him knocking on my door
Sounds like his sons followed in his footsteps too sadly?

In reply to Post #789 That was the british title fight against john l gardner , He still holds the record of fighting for a title with the least number of pro fights 6 i think ? Spent years in prison for various things charles bronson was a mate of his , had 2 sons both in prison for 2 seperate murders ! Got an asbo and had to stay out of wakefield centre , a real character who escaped from a foreign jail and swam across shark infested waters ! Sadly died a alcoholic .

In reply to Post #788 Yeah, I’ve heard of him Jeff, if he was the heavyweight, lot older than me.
He was a bit of a local brawler and knuckler mate, not to be messed with. I remember seeing one of his biggest fights, just turned his back and walked off, ref stopped it, quite a character

In reply to Post #784 No doubt about it, in his prime one of the most entertaining fighters I have seen, as well as his tear up style I used to love his rope work, moving, slipping, counter, brilliant

In reply to Post #785 Thing is someone somewhere in the world will sanction it somehow. Johnny Nelson has written an article about it saying its for closure rather than aiming for another career. Hopefully neither get hurt if it does go ahead. There's talk of Shannon briggs fighting again too, he's a similar age to Benn. Such a shame these guys can't accept their careers for what they are, both very good but in the past

In reply to Post #781 Benn one of my all time favourites, proper warrior, I had a signed photograph, put it up behind the bar in my local boozer
Why the hell is he fighting SB, I don’t know what he’s like now but I expect him to beat Benn, he has got a bit of pedigree. 55, that’s mental
Massive Benn fan like I say Jeff but Collins whooped his arse big time. Proper machine Collins

My Hero and someone i got to know quite well Nigel benn will be returning to the ring later this year at the age of 55 !! He will be fighting ex world champ sadio bika age 40 , Spent some time with Nigel in tenerife training up mount teide , Never seen a fitter bloke in my life but that was 25 years ago ! He was devastated when steve collins retired him , if he hadnt got mixed up with the infamous essex boys he would have won that fight ! Gotta say what the hell is he doing !The sport is becoming a joke if this goes ahead.
